So since it's actually maybe already a year, who cares if something from near the beginning makes a comeback?

Some movies suck. Some movies suck hard. And then some movies are so bad they are good again. That's usually why I'm showing them! Sometimes there's no real reason, it's just got something special. Sometimes, there is a specific reason. Sometimes, there is a specific person. Usually, that person is fully aware of what they are in. What they are doing. They are hamming it up. they are hamming it up so wondefully what was bad is now what is great about the movie. They are saving it. Often, it's the guy who can be over the top most easily... the one that you don't have to like, just notice. The guy you can point to and say "That's the bad guy!"

Saturday, we look at some of those great men who made us root for evil.

Need help with a teaching demo

Seems to me there are quite a few teachers hanging around this community, so I was hoping I could get some advice. I’m going in for an interview next week for a position teaching English at a private international school, where I will be giving a teaching demo to a group of instructors. The demo consists of two 15-minute lectures. For the first I’ve been assigned a topic, but the second is up to me to design from scratch.

I’ve never done a lecture as short as 15 minutes before, so I’m having trouble finding a topic. Since the assigned lecture is on grammar and uses presentation slides, I was thinking I’d stay away from the “chalk-and-talk” style with my own and have the class sit down for seminar-type discussion, perhaps starting with a brief reading exercise and then splitting up into groups for a debate so there’s more student involvement. I want to get them to speak and think critically and actually use English. Plus, I myself have always performed best under the Socratic method, and I’m hoping this approach would help showcase that I am flexible and open to different learning styles.

Still, coming up with an appropriate topic has been a real challenge. Keep in mind the target audience should be secondary school students. So… what do the teachers among us think? Should I go with the above idea? Would it be too ambitious for 15-20 minutes? Any suggestions for a fun, engaging topic that’ll hopefully make a good enough impression to land me this job? :)

Scams and frauds

The PIN secret seemed fitting for my day today.

My bank recently canceled my debit card, as I had used it at Target during the whole hacking incident. I got the new one today, but lost or didn't receive the letter with my new PIN. I called the bank number on the card envelope, and the lady who answered asked the usual identification verification questions.... and then some (?). Then she flat out asked me what I wanted my new PIN to be. I hesitantly toward her the number and she set it up. I thought we were never supposed to say our PIN on the phone or to anyone ever, so it was kind of jarring. I've half convinced myself that the number was a fake (but it's on the bank website!) or the employee who I spoke with is secretly going to steal all of my (non-existent) money. Is this normal?

Then, while my current debit card was canceled and before I set up the new one today, I tried to buy something with my credit card, which uses a different company. That card was canceled, too! I never use my credit card, too much of a hassle to worry about, and I certainly didn't use it at Target. I called the credit card company and they said they canceled it a week ago because of weird hotel charges. Apparently over February, the card had been used a bunch of times for strange Internet purchases, all of which were approved, until the final hotel incident. I don't have to pay for any of that, but the card has been buried in my wallet for so long, I'm just amazed that anyone got that information.

Not a good day for me financially, apparently. Have you ever been a target of fraud/scams/identity theft/whatever?

I just got the first C I've ever got on a paper in four years of college. I'd like to say "Senioritis, you're doin' it right!" and shrug it off and just do better on the next paper, but I feel bad because it's actually one of the few college papers I really cared about and really worked hard on, turned in a first draft and discussed it with the professor and everything. I think it's because I cared about the topic so much I couldn't bear to ruthlessly narrow and focus it like, you know, a proper essay, and didn't sacrifice my meandering grasping at what I actually felt and meant for modest but innaccurate coherency of argument.

Thank god I'm not a lit major. I get waaaaay too overinvested in lit to pursue it academically with any kind of sanity or perspective. And I really need to learn how to plan my topics better. *facepalm*

So what's the deal with fandom X?

Two weeks ago tonight I got into an accident on the way home from the weekly karaoke night, and my car was destroyed. I've spent the last two weeks more or less trying to rebuild my independence and deal with everything that had to be dealt with thanks to the accident, while not having my own transportation, and long story short... I've discovered that I'm now apparently afraid of driving. I've been driving for like 15 years, this is the first accident I've ever been in that I didn't just drive home from, the first time I've ever had towing companies or insurance involved, and now every time I even think of getting in the car I start feeling nauseated.

Tomorrow I'll be picking up my new (used) car from the shop where it's going through final detail/cleaning, so that part will finally be over. The one bright spot in all this is that it's a Prius, and I have wanted a hybrid for years, just they weren't affordable when I was in the market for a car last time, and I was quite happy with my old car ever since. I'll miss it terribly, but the Prius, even an old one, is a huge upgrade. And it's so different to drive than anything I've ever driven, it triggers the anxiety MUCH less than being in other cars.

But in the meantime I have a loaner car from the dealer to drive around... and tonight's karaoke night. It's also a nice car - a Chevy Cruze. But my car that was in the accident was also a Chevy (Cobalt), and I have so far discovered that driving the very similar Cruze makes my anxiety worse... and I'll be driving it to the same spot downtown where I had my accident. I have been through the intersection a couple of times now from a different direction, in daylight, in the Prius, and I still tense up when I get there. Going there at night, in a similar car...

I'm now torn between trying to "get back on the horse" and going out tonight and trying to have a good time, or just staying home and cowering until I have the Prius to drive there. :/
