Why are there so many couple of hundred word fanfics around right now? They are basically just a vague concept and a couple of lines of dialogue and that is it. How come fewer and fewer people are sitting down and writing longer fanfics? Is it because so many writers are just changing canon character names and trying to sell them on Amazon as being original fiction?

Or possibly Munchausen's by internet? Not that you have to respond, I won't be doing anything unless it escalates. But am I wrong to be suspicious?

Atm my only fandom is a message board for tv shows. Recently a regular poster just happened to slip into her post that she was just diagnosed with end-stage cancer. It was incredibly clunky (well, the character shouldn't have much to worry about unless they were like me and got this news:), and now the thread is clogged up with people giving condolences.

The thing is, we're not talking a very insular community or even an individual fandom. The manner of dropping that bomb was odd -- and the context was even odder, this is not a place you talk about yourself as opposed to the media unless it directly relates to the media in question. We aren't a loving tumblrite community, hell I don't bother reading peoples' screennames half the time. This poster I do remember because of her icon and prolific posting.

Would this ping your bullshit sensor too? Have you ever caught or suspected someone in the act of setting up pseuicide or munchausens by internet?

If you want to watch Jessica Jones to support what it's trying to achieve, but don't want to trigger yourself, I have an alternative.

Don't watch season 2 of Daredevil. If you don't watch JJ but do watch DD it will give the impression that male superheroes are more marketable. So here's what I'm doing. I'm not watching season 2. Maybe I'll bootleg it. but I won't be promoting the show about white males in an angst-off. If you all do the same, JJ's ratings will stay high, DD will drop, and marvel may get the idea that the world is ready for more woman friendly content.

today was weird. was out with daughters today. They're 5 and 7. lady comes up tries to stand between me and my daughters while asking them 'where is your mommy?' and 'do you know this man?' about me. i don't respond well. i tell lady to go mind her own f'ing business and to leave us alone. i tell her these are my daughters. she want's to see proof. i have photos which i show her. she backs off and walks away while giving me a 'i'm watching you' look. what the shit, right?

Doom (2016) closed beta

Bit late tonight, but I wanted to talk about the Doom closed beta.

I pre-ordered Wolfenstein: The New Order almost exclusively because I wanted Doom beta access. I was mostly taking a risk; I wasn't sure how good TNO would be but I wanted that beta. It was a silly risk to take, now that I think of it -- the beta ends tonight after, what, 3 days? And it was multiplayer-only. And we waited nearly two years for it to happen.

Well, TNO turned out to be fucking awesome, and so did the beta! I've played a lot of the "classic" multiplayer games over the years -- Doom, of course, but also Quake (mostly Quake 3, never really got into Q1 or 2's multi), Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike, etc. D16's multi is pretty much Quake 5 (though I detect hints of Unreal) but with some added twists. It's a real blast to play, and quite refreshing after watching pure deathmatch or team deathmatch fade from popularity in favor of more objectives-based or "realistic" (read: Call of Duty/Counter-Strike) modes of play.

I wasn't sure I was going to give a hot shit about Doom's multi when the full game comes out, but I think I might be putting in a few hours of it after all. :) I'm getting pretty excited for the game, who's with me?
