I liked Will so much from the very beginning, probably because he reminded me of many sweet, vulnerable child protagonists in movies from my childhood: Stand By Me, The NeverEnding Story, The Goonies, etc.

But I never thought Stranger Things did Will justice. Not even in his coming-out scene. He was frequently the catalyst and victim, and I'd hoped season 5 would be his season. They... tried. I can see that they tried. Maybe it was too little, too late? It was underwhelming.

I hope the actor has a better career arc after this to make up for it.

I liked him in spite of the show making him it’s kicked dog every season, it’s why I’m happy he got to fully embrace himself, even if his coming out was a bit clunky, because that was something genuinely good for him.

From what I can tell, his fans think the show mistreated him, and people who aren't so fond of him think he was given favoritism by the writers and that their own fave got shafted to give him more screentime. I only saw the first season, so I barely had an opinion of him, but if the fave who got shafted to make room for him was El then good, he couldn't possibly be worse than that little shit.

The show overall had a lot of writing/characterization issues IMO, but yeah. Will was definitely a casualty there.

For a while there Will seemed so interesting. I wasn't really thinking about canonizing him as gay (if anything, I was hoping they'd lean more towards emotionally stunted with no outright claims of homosexuality/asexuality but there would be a lot of coding going on), but by the end of season 3 I was open to seeing where they'd go with Will's gay arch. LOL
...they tried, and it's sweet fans found Will's coming out sweet/cathartic, etc. But I think Will Byers will forever be a character failed by the potential he never to try out

The end of Sorcerer was the best Will I've ever seen. He accepts himself and his trauma, and BOOM, he's a bad ass superhero! It just sucks that he turns into a sobbing mess later. It was like he regressed.

I don't think people who like the Harry Potter books or movies, create fan works, or pirate newer stuff like the game or the new show, are doing anything bad. Don't give JKR money, but enjoying it in a way that doesn't give her any is fine.

And I have seen the 'She thinks people who like HP support her!!' argument. She doesn't know if you're pirating or writing fanfic. Anyway, who cares what she thinks.

Hard agree. I just had this conversation with a friend. They can't stand to have anything to do with anything remotely JKR or HP related and immediately think less of people, where I'm like who cares if she isn't profiting? Enjoy your fanworks and your silly RPs and communities, just don't buy the stuff that she makes money on. And I agree, fanworks and fanfic is not in the public eye and she does not make money on it. Go have your fun.

At this point it's hard for me to take most talk of hp in any good faith-- mostly it comes off as someone saying 'hey, tell me I'm still a good person even if I do the bad thing, tell me I get a pass to engage with the fascist terf billionaire'. Like, either own up to the fact that you care more about kids' books than real people's lives, move on, or shut the fuck up in public about it and read your old copies of the books/watch your DVDs in private.

Like, you CANNOT tell me that if you're an adult who retains ANY investment in hp, and you are in online spaces that expect you to respect trans people's right to exist, that you have never encountered the idea that your ATTENTION is valuable to jkr. It's been discussed! It comes off as disingenuous at best to ask for absolution for, or defend, your continued participation in a visible fandom for the series. You can re-read the books without starting yet another discussion on why you think you should be allowed to get excited about harry fuckin potter.

I mean, this IS fandom secrets, I can't fault OP for bringing it here and not their blog or group chat or what have you. And my ire is not for OP specifically, it's for the many people who can't abandon the franchise but also can't handle the cognitive dissonance of doing something they KNOW is harmful to other people, so they need to make it okay to still be invested in hp, and they have to bring it up and shove it, however inadvertently, into the faces of those most hurt by it who would love to move on.

I find it annoying that whenever a celebrity who allegedly did something problematic in life,dies there is a group of killjoys who are quick to remind everyone what the celebrity did, even before the body is cold and imply anyone who mourns the celeb is a bad person or ignorant. THe deaths of Kobe Bryant and XXXtencion were prime examples of this. When Kobe Bryant died people came out of the woodwork to rag on him for being an alleged rapist and gave people shit for "mourning a rapist" . XXXtencion was ragged on for being an alleged abuser. The worst part is tha tmost of the people doing this had nothing to say about their alleged crimes when they died? When they died , people suddenly care about tehir alleged crimes? Where was the outrage over kobe being a rapist when he was alive?

Love how people continue to shit on Taylor Swift when the Epstein list just came out and has so many celebrities, politicians, etc who are pedophiles and all around corrupt ghouls. But we've got to focus on what is important, which is obviously tearing down a pop star because we don't like her music or her fiancé or whatever. After watching "Leaving Neverland," I can no longer listen to the songs "Childhood", "Little Susie", "D.S" and "The Lost Children". I can listen to the rest of MJ's songs just fine, but the songs I mentioned make me extremely uncomfortable. Especdcially childhood. It feels so manipualtive to me. I find the intended moral of "Michael Jacksons Ghosts" to be very disturbing. The Mayor is painted as a villain for trying to chase out of his town , a strange adult man named Maestro meeting up with minors in secret at night. Maestro drives the mayor to suicide and it is treated as completely right by the in-universe narrative and the parents start loving maestro after the mayor dies. Apparently parents should just let their kids meet up and play with strange adults who tell them to keep secrets. WTF. Seriously WTF

... but you wouldn't mind if someone else made them for you! As always, including the fandom and full character names is a big help, and while I'm definitely not the world's greatest expert at secret design, I'll try my best. Please note that long comment secrets can be difficult to make with a good end result. Most of the time, I'll give it a shot but might not be able to make secrets where the text is so lengthy that I can't fit it into the limited space.

I'm trying something new with the comment secret thread and extending the deadline to comment until Monday's post goes up. I'll monitor this thread until then, and hope the extra day will be more helpful for everyone.

If I had to choose, and it's a topic I don't care about, I'd rather be around haters than stans.

IME haters will leave you alone and interact amongst themselves if you clearly state you couldn't give less of a shit about a topic, but stans are desperate for everybody to like their thing, take your lack of care as an insult, and try pointlessly to defend their thing from your imaginary attack of not-caring until you're sick of them.
