So when she was three, my sister had an acute and really scary reaction to an MMR vaccination. In response, my mother made the descision not to vaccinate me at all, or to give my sister any more. (Tbh, I thought she was anti-vax for years until I realized she was simply using the movement's literature to convince our school that no, she didn't want her specific children to be vaccinated after that incident. She was dealing with people who believed that a child who had seizures after each shot still had to get them. No common sense at all.)

Anyway, my sister's all grown up now and she's a nurse, meaning she had to have several mandatory vaccinations, and it appears she's gotten over what was probably a childhood allergy. I've always had a really healthy immune system but I attribute that to genetics, good environment (sheltered American kid here), and long-term breastfeeding.

So, with that context, I'm switching my medical insurance soon and I have to go in for a physical. And I'm trying to decide which vaccines I should have. I'm 26, in good physical health and not particularly at risk for anything at the moment. (I'd rather risk the flu than risk the flu shot because a. I have never had it in my life despite being exposed to it, and b. I always have the nagging feeling that this year's shot was for last year's strain.) I do know I want a tetanus shot just to be sure. I don't want any shots for illnesses that I'm extremely unlikely to get, like polio (obviously this would be different if there was an epidemic with a decent chance of getting to me). I'm not sexually active, have never been, and I don't plan on being so for a long time. If and when I do decide to have sex, I will not be sleeping with anyone who hasn't been tested. The chances of my being raped are incredibly low. But I do have interest in having children someday and would like to be clear of any potentially harmful (to a fetus) vaccines before any attempts at conception.

I'm not anti-vaccine, I simply feel that injecting potentially harmful medicine into a healthy body needs to be considered with each individual shot, weighing the risks vs the gains. I don't even know how my body will react to even one shot.

So finally, long rambling over, what do you, you rabidly vaccine-loving populous you, think I should absolutely be inoculated against?

I figured this is as good a place as any, so: I just got into the MGS series a few weeks ago and have been blasting through the games since then. I've played MGS4, MGS2, MGS1 up until the Psycho Mantis fight now, and am currently at the part in MGS3 where Snake disguises himself as Raikov, but I'm playing MGS3 with a friend, so I can't play it as fast as the others.

How much do I have left in MGS3 from that part on? And would starting MGS: Peace Walker now spoil me anything for what I have left of MGS3? I know The Boss is going to die, and Snake will probably lose his eye at some point, and I don't know if he'll be called Big Boss yet in MGS3 or not. I just want more MGS, but I want to avoid spoilers for what little I can since I've played the series in such a backwards order. (And, does Ocelot show up in Peace Walker at all? He's fun to watch.)

Um, also, if anyone has recs for any fics or other fan stuff for the series, that would be appreciated (although please warn if they spoil what I haven't played yet).

My marvel_bang posting date is next Friday (the 14th). As depressing as this is, I actually forgot that I hadn't finished my fic until recently (or rather, typed it up - I have most of it written by hand due a hand injury, I forgot that I hadn't typed it up in the chaos of moving twice in two weeks and starting a new school). So now I'm scrambling to get it all typed up. I'd never heard from my artist so while I'm making kind of a last-ditch contact attempt again tonight, I'm kind of giving up art for my fic as a lost cause. I still really want to post it, but the RL friend who was going to beta for me has dropped all contact, and I recently moved to another city so I won't be seeing them in person any time soon.

I could have sworn there used to be an LJ community for Avengers betas, but apparently there isn't...? The only beta-search community I could find is pretty inactive.

I just need someone who can beta ~60-80,000 words by next Friday (or, hell, a few people who can take 10k-20k each). Anyone willing to help, or know where I can find someone to help?

I've been vaccinated, thank you very much. And I am VERY PRO-VAX, YOU FUCKER. I can't get the Pertussis vaccine cause I'm allergic to it, but I damn well will get my future kids and myself vaccines and boosters.

We've had a lot of SFF recently, so how about something different.
We had a thread recently on the James Herriot tv series over on the secrets page, so lets read one of the books. If you are unaware, it is the memoirs of a rural veterinarian in the UK before WW2. Packed full of character and real life British eccentrics. Its almost guaranteed to give you the warm fuzzies.
