I've been off all week. I did have wednesday afternoon to friday booked as holidays, so I was going to have the second half off anyway, but I woke up on sunday with 75% of my cornea gone. It's a week off work but it's agonizing pain. My pay from monday through to today lunchtime is forfeit, and the holidays I was going to take for the rest of the week are going to be shit. I'd rather have just had a normal hump day.

It's been thundering and raining here a lot for the past week and the air is so heavy and humid. I also feel like I might be ill.

Yeah, pretty good. Went to Wal-Mart for paper this morning, checked the mail on the way home. Went swimming after lunch and then came home and mowed the lawn when the temp was 30C/34C with the humidex. Looking back, I probably should've done those two things in the reverse order.

The sad thing is that two weeks of summer vacation are now done. *sigh* The only thing shorter than a weekend is a vacation. I remember when I was a kid summer seemed to last forever--now it just flies by.

My poor cat is having problems with his butt and I'm going to have to take him to the vet tomorrow. I feel terrible for not noticing anything was wrong sooner! He's been hiding under my bed all night and that's very unlike him, so he must be in a lot of pain and that's killing me. :( He's the sweetest cat in the world, too, my poor little dude.

Dumbest mistakes about a piece of fiction you've ever seen

Could be an official book or movie review where the reviewer totally misunderstands or misinterprets the piece of fiction they're reviewing. Could be a fiction or nonfiction in which a piece of fiction is discussed but the writer gets the facts about the piece of fiction so wildly wrong that the discussion entirely falls apart. Or it could be a piece of fanfiction or fandom meta where the writer obviously has missed some crucial canon information and has no idea what they're talking about. Or even a personal conversation you've had with a friend or fellow fan.

What are the dumbest mistakes about and misrepresentations of a piece of fiction you've ever seen?

Is Harem manga / anime more feminist than it seems?

So here's the argument I was given: Sure the women are often fanservicey and often focus so entirely on the male at the centre which is a two big points in the 'Bad' column, but on the other side the women are often much more interesting, much more regularly the focus of the show itself (sure in a 'Male gaze' type way, but also in a 'This is how they are and what drives them'), and have much more obvious developed characters, at least compared to the male who is a blank slate to fill the presumed male viewers male power fantasy, which will not good thing, it does have the bonus of having the largely female cast being more relatable as people.

Getting jarred when reading a fic about a different version of a character than you expected

I'm mostly thinking about works where there's an "original" work, and then there a film/movie adaptation of the book/comics, or a reboot, or stuff like that.

Like, a character pops up and his/her description, or characterization, or interactions with the other characters, are totally different that what you expected going into the fic, either because you're unfamiliar with that version, or because you didn't take note of which version the fic was based on.

Are there any fandoms that you're involved that are...actually just pretty nice? Like, there's very little drama, the fanfic is all or mostly weirdly normal, and most people get along?

Is there any fandom that you're in that feel is almost too unproblematic and you actually wish there was more drama or excitement happening?
