General comments:

I'm gonna start with some grammar stuff.

English is a sucky language full of tricky homonyms, I know. But I'm tired of seeing these mixed up constantly in fic.

First: taut/taunt/taught

taut means tightly drawn or tense, as in muscles or nerves

taught is the past tense of teach

taunt means to make fun of someone/ridicule. Can be a noun or verb.


Second: peak/peek/pique

peak is the top of a mountain, the most important point or level of something or the maximum point, level or volume of anything

peek means to look or glance quickly or furtively. Can be a noun or verb.

pique means to arouse an emotion or provoke an action, to excite interest or curiosity or to wound as in pride or vanity


Third:

bear means the animal, to carry/support, to bring forth/give birth to, to hold up under/be capable of

bare means naked, uncovered, undisguised, unadorned, plain

Teaching Abroad Anon

Does anyone know of a place to ask questions to specific people? I have been on Dave's ESL Cafe but...there seems to be A LOT of assholes. Or maybe they are trolls. Either way, looking up answers to questions usually ends with me being really discouraged and changing my mind about teaching abroad.

The guy I've been in love with for a year just hooked up with another girl.

We're great friends, and yesterday was so good - talked through some emotional troubles, decided on a bunch of projects we'd do together, walked home together, yadda yadda, we fucked before and that's where I thought it was leading.

And today he got assigned a school project with the new girl, they talked for five hours straight - mind you, this is normally a pretty introverted guy, social, but introverted - and then went to his apartment.

I don't know what role she will fill in his life from now on - fuckbuddy, sure, but they talked about some of the stuff I had talked with him before about, and she handled it better, if she becomes his moral support too, I don't know what is left for me.

Can't stop shaking, what am I supposed to do?

I know it sounds hysterical, but on top of that pretty much nothing in my life is going in the right direction right now, I'm on antidepressants as it is, I don't know if I can handle this too.

If your fic summary says "an OC" or "some OCs", I'll probably read it. If it says "my OC"? I'll take a pass.

I'm seriously starting to think "my OC" is the non-furry equivalent of "my fursona"--the only difference in the kind of stories they star in is that fursonas are more likely to fuck one other character, whereas Original Characters called "my OC" are more likely to fuck every character the author thinks is hot. Sometimes all at once.

There's an RA Lafferty short story where a spaceship lands on a planet that looks exactly like the Garden of Eden - complete with Adam, Eve, the snake, the apple tree. And the crew has to decide if it's really what it seems, see? Whether it's actually a complete paradise that they should colonize, or not. But they investigate it, and most of the crew of the ship thinks it checks out - it seems authentic, they can't see any danger, all the details seem right.

And so they decide to leave and come back to colonize it, and when they come back, they're all slaughtered, it was a trap. And so they ask one of the guys on the original crew why he didn't believe it, and he says, "I knew it couldn't be real. It was just too good to be true - the whole time we were there, the woman never spoke a word."

It's not even that good of a joke but it took me by surprise so much the first time I read it (not expecting the story to be a joke) that I cracked up.
