How does your garden grow, FS?

Any gardeners here? I'm trying to start an herb garden this year. So far I've got rosemary and chives, and I hope to plant some basil, sage, dill and thyme. Usually I don't have a whole lot of luck with growing things from seed but I bought some zinnia seeds because I hear they're easy to grow.

This sounds kind of lame, but winter was long and miserable and I'd really like a riot of color and nice-smelling things this summer.

Musical questions help!

I am writing a fic which features a band (in canon), and of course I have no musical experience of my own. Two guys are Jim (not his actual name) who plays guitar, and Bill (nor his) who plays bass and sometimes guitar, and sometimes a bunch of other instruments, because I guess he's a prodigy. I'd be more comfortable with this arrangement if they stuck to one instrument apiece, but alas...

My questions are:

1. What, if any, are the differences between guitar and bass? I realize that both are technically guitars, and that bass is generally a deeper sound, but that is the extent of my knowledge.

2. Can anyone who plays guitar play bass, and vice versa, or is Bill exceptionally talented, and Jim's out of luck?

3. I have a situation where Bill is chatting with a new friend and gets asked what instruments he plays. Would he actually say something like "Bass, and sometimes guitar", or is that just unnecessarily pedantic?

Write what you know, I know, but I didn't get sucked into a fandom that I understand...

Political Animals

Gotta unload. I've read on some random post on tumblr how this show is crappy and Kings is, instead, at least a lot more enjoyable.

Yes, we are talking about shows Sebastian Stan has been in, but this is irrelevant now.

Kings > Political Animals? Really?

My position on this: I've watched Political Animals when it aired, to this day I still think it's one of the best shows out there in terms of character writing, acting and especially in terms of amazing roles for women. I would say it's one of the FEW shows out there that has women in major roles, a story that revolves around women and with extremely good actresses on top of that.

Then I discover it's not even considered enjoyable... and I admit this upset me on a personal level.

Thoughts? Anyone seen it and wants to tell me what I'm doing wrong, or right, or whatever? I can't believe this show has been forgotten so easily... I was hoping it would inspire other shows to do the same.

I thought I'd mention I don't consider myself a social justice warrior at all, so I don't mean to stir up unnecessary drama.

fandom as a whole doesn't seem to be very fond of classics, which is a shame, because that's all i read (that, and hard sci-fi, which somehow has a bigger fanbase). one could argue that the ever popular sherlock holmes series could be considered a classic, but i don't agree.

anyway, my personal favorites are of mice and men, all the king's men, 1984, manhattan transfer and the stranger.

What's one of your favorite, lesser-known books? I noticed that when people ask me for recs, I usually end up naming stuff they've already heard of. So, variety! Go!

also I just watched GOT and I basically want a book solely about Brienne so if anyone has any recs for books about lady knights, that would be awesome.

One of my RL friends is having a hard time with something, and posted about it on facebook without details. Both me and my mom have friended her, so about a half hour after RL Friend post her thing, Mom calls me and starts interrogating me like I should know every single thing that is going on. I have no clue! I don't know anymore than Mom does. I understand she's concerned I am too, but I'm not going to be the first person RL Friend comes to with distressing stuff, and I don't like to pry into things. Mom has known me my entire life obviously and has known RL Friend since I was in junior high, she should know what we're like by now, yet she always does this.

This is a less important aggravation, but I have several fics I really want to finish and it's just not happening. On top of that I keep getting ideas for other fics like a Bed and Breakfast AU. Is that even a thing? I know there are bakery AUs, but I've never heard of a Bed and Breakfast AU.

And finally We've has a lot of rain here, most of it has ended up in the crawlspace under my house. I finally got done draining it but I fully expect more water to be in there tomorrow, and we're supposed to get rain, and storms all freaking week. I hate this time of year.

I'm so upset.

I have a friend who desperately needs cash, so he's set up commissions. I'm planning to order a few, spaced out, for as much as I can spare, but I felt bad because the person is in Europe and euros are worth more than dollars, so what might have been a very helpful amount of money here isn't quite as much over there.

Today I found out that not everyone uses euros, and in fact some places, such as where my friend lives, still use pounds. A $25 commission from me probably won't even pay for lunch. Fuck. I hate money.

Today I've sat on the Iron Throne and gazed across Westeros from atop of the Wall (using Oculus Rift). In other words the Game of Thrones exhibiton is in my city and it was awesome (Really recommend it if you're a fan and it's coming near you!)

So, have any of you done any awesome fandomy things or been to cool events lately? Or do you have something you're looking forward to?
