Discussing Fandoms You Don't Know

I was thinking about all the fandoms that people request to talk about but no one says anything. I don't say anything personally because I don't know the fandoms, and don't have a lot of time to get into something new. But I would be willing to ask questions and start a discussion that way.

If you have a tiny fandom, are you looking to talk about what happened in the canon with people who know the fandom at least a little? If someone did ask you questions, etc., would that feel like a one-time deal? Would it be satisfying?

For other people, what do you think when you see a small-fandom-ask? Are you interested in talking about it or only want to talk about something you know? Do you feel that you should know the fandom before asking anything? Anyone have any ideas what to ask (beyond "what's it about?"), or things you would want people to ask you?

Would love some thoughts on this.

Sometimes I'll see a movie or read a book on a whim that's outside my normal interests, and sometimes it fails epicly and sometimes I get interested in a new genre/etc. Surely I'm not the only one! Let us know something you liked that you'd like to see more of.

For me: I recently watched The Lake House and was surprised how much I enjoyed it. I'm not normally into romcoms or 'chick flicks' but I liked it's low-key combo of romance, drama, and TIME TRAVEL SHENANIGANS. (really, I'm mostly easy for time loops) Are there any other movies or books I can check out with a similar appeal? Like, pretty chill, chickflick-y but with a little something extra (like more time travel plots, or the male lead is secretly an alien or something, idk)

Hi!

I've been living in Japan for four years and I'm looking to move back to the states around 2017. I'm looking into moving to Southern California (I'm from Vegas) and I was hoping someone could answer some questions and give me a little advice.

-I would prefer not to drive. I know this limits my options a lot, but I'd definitely prefer somewhere I could walk or take public transportation. I've heard Anaheim and San Diego are pretty good for this? Is Northern California better?

-I would prefer not to have roommates. I know this is entirely dependent on whatever job I manage to get, but I've been gone so long I don't know what the housing market is like. I'm not looking for a mansion, a one-room in a safe neighborhood would be more than enough. I'm used to cramped living, haha.

Of course safety is my top priority. I know there are good and bad neighborhoods everywhere, and I know California is expensive. Those two things above are my only strong preferences, and even they're flexible, since I don't know what kind of job I'll be able to get. I'd like to have a general area in mind before I start job hunting, though.

I'm just looking for advice, mostly, to see if I'm even being reasonable. Thanks in advance!

FS, what's your take on the "non-apology" (eg "I'm sorry I offended you")? Because I hear people complain about it all the time, but it seems perfectly reasonable to me.

I mean sure, sometimes I know I'm walking a fine line, clearly cross it and apologize. And sometimes I don't see the line, and the person I've offended makes sense, I adjust my worldview and apologize.

But sometimes? Sometimes people are just acting batshit, and I'm not about to acknowledge them as the sole representative for all that is offensive to whatever group they say they're a part of. So, from there I have two options: Apologize for existing in a way that they don't like and endeavor to remake myself to their specifications of what makes a good human being, regardless of what I think of their batshittery or apologize for having caused them discomfort.

I'm going to go with the one that is sincere. But this, apparently, is an unacceptable non-apology.

She was my second-favorite author, first favorite for anything 'dark' or creepy, she was *amazing* and her style was incredible. Lush, humid, claustrophobic at times, so full of tiny details and beautiful imagery....

I will definitely mourn her passing. And must re-read all the things.... Don't Bite the Sun, The Silver-Metal Lover, The Secret Books of Paradys, A Heroine of the World, Black Unicorn, the 'Personal Darkness' series, the Venus series.... So many things.
