...a fictional character meets another (sometimes one-off, sometimes recurring) character who's very similar in certain ways to the first character, except the second character is a massive dick or went down the wrong path or is a kind of dark twisted version of himself (or herself) with all the flaws exaggerated or all the good traits missing?

For some reason, I'm really fascinated by this phenomenon and want to hear about more examples of it. Can anyone recall examples of this?

Hello everyone! Today I have pictures of the adorable iriomote cat, a cat you may recognize the name of if you're a fan of Azumanga Daioh! As of 2008, there were only around 100 iriomote cats left in the wild, meaning that they are considered "critically endangered".

As for spiders, today is crab spiders! Specifically Xysticus sp.

As for Friday's theme, I'm thinking maybe bringing attention to the lizards, so tomorrow is "could be a dragon" day, where you, if you like, will post pictures of lizards/snakes/other that look like they could be dragons. :)

Fingal Stream 2: Not Electric Boogaloo

I haven't really come up for a title I like for my stream. "F!S movie night" is still top contender in my mind, but it doesn't quite have that... je nais se quoi for which I'm looking. So, let's just call this Fingal Stream 2: Not Electric Boogaloo (because we are watching that movie on another day).

A more vague theme this time: WEIRD BUT AWESOME! Specifically, weird but awesome movies set in a semi post-apocalyptic and/or alternate universe in which bizarre happenings are seemingly kind of the norm. You'll see why I chose these two particular films, I hope.

First, Motorama. Next, The Dark Backward.

I'm not providing a synopsis for either, I'm afraid. I recommend going into these with as little foreknowledge as possible.

Additionally, I intend to reshow dethtoll's contribution of Amazing Video Weirdness as well as few other short weird but awesome things.

I'll start:

Sometimes I feel like people use vague "mental illness" umbrellas as an excuse to not have to deal with life. Which is a horrible thing to say, I know, and I know there are people for whom that is not true -- but I also can't shake this feeling about a great many people who piss and moan about the awful state they're in, but they can't possibly do any reasonable thing whatsoever to fix it because THEY HAVE ANXIETY!

To me, those people are behaving in a manner only mildly better than ones who complain about not having enough food but they refuse to go to a food bank (or, if recently laid off, take unemployment) because "they have too much pride for that." At least Janie Screaming Anxiety over there has a reason that may or may not be rooted, in some degree, to something medically real.

I'm 21! So far I've been ill and slept in until eleven. Going out to lunch with my BFFsy and then probably go see the family.

It's not much of a celebration today to be honest, but that's because a group of friends and I are leaving for Japan on the weekend and that's when the REAL party starts. I am looking forward to it like burning. :3

So I'm finally watching Classic Who...

I've wanted to start watching Classic Who for a long time now, and now I'm finally getting into it. However, there's a LOT of stuff there, and it's hard to judge the quality from the episode descriptions because of how old and stylistically different the show is. Plus, I want to jump around from era to era to familiarize myself with everything, not slog through it in order.

So, does anyone have recs for their favorite serials? I know everyone has different ideas, but any suggestions would be welcome!

According to the comments on this, a lot of people think that authors who have accounts on goodreads shouldn't rate or review books there, because apparently that is somehow insulting? I'm not sure I understand the logic behind this. Are they saying that when you write a book you forfeit your right to express your opinion of other people's books? That if you know what it's like to be a writer, you aren't allowed to criticize, or even dislike other people's writing?

Well, there's a character in my fandom who is disliked by pretty much everyone except me - to the point where I'm embarrassed to say so even anon. But it turns out that "pretty much" does not mean "literally" because I just found out that my favorite artist is a fangirl of said character. I squeed.

Then I tried to PM her on tumblr to squee about it but I couldn't find the PM option so I used her askbox even though it wasn't a question...naturally she didn't respond...but I don't even care that I made a fail because I'm not alone! *does a happy dance*

You didn't actually make a fail, anon- that's a perfectly valid use for askboxes and people use them to send messages all the time.
