I'm still finishing up Borderlands (have the last DLC to do) and I just discovered the existence of Crawmerax. As I primarily play solo, I'm gonna have to say "nope."

Never understood the point of raid bosses. Not everyone likes to play with other people, and I only rarely play co-op and only with people I know and trust.

How do you reject people?

Do you ever reject people you do kind of have a crush on, but it's too mild, and you don't want to jump into a relationship? Like, you'd rather keep looking? What do you say?

Just had this situation. Very nice guy, very sweet, but I really don't want to be tied down. Except, I don't know. I don't like being put on the spot when people confess their feelings and ask you out, I panic and get really uncomfortable, and try to wriggle out of it if I can. I wouldn't mind going on a date or two with this guy, but I don't want to be in a relationship with him, or exclusive at all. But he's too nice, I feel shitty saying that, especially if he is looking for more.

Common phrases/words that get totally misunderstood

So I noticed yesterday on F!S there was some disagreement of the term "whitewashing" - some people were saying it was weird that people were using it beyond the concept of casting white actors instead of POC, while others argued that the sj meaning was actually secondary, and it was about washing blood out of clothes, or something. I was kind of surprised that no-one was aware that 'whitewash' is actually a paint substitute, a cheap solution historically used by the lower classes to make their houses look cleaner/brighter as an alternative to expensive paint. It's a quick and easy way to cover up stains or dirt, which is where it gets its metaphorical meaning. I thought this was extremely common knowledge, but apparently not.

I guess another popular example would be "call a spade a spade"; I always assumed this referred to the garden tool, and was floored to find out that some people considered it a racist term, because "black as the ace of spades" was also a common phrase in the American south. I am so glad I never used that one in company; I had no idea it had such offensive connotations.

So I'm curious, F!S. What phrases or words have you misunderstood in the past, or been surprised when someone holds a totally different understanding to you?

Is there a term for when someone's sexuality doesn't match their romantic orientation?

Say Joan is in love with Polly. Really truly in romantic love. If Polly were a man she'd be in a relationship with her in an instant, but Polly is female. Joan has legitimately tried to be attracted to women just for Polly's sake, but it hasn't worked because Joan only finds men sexually attractive, and there's nothing she can do about it. Joan wishes she were a lesbian.

Is Joan queer?

If Polly feels the same way about Joan, what do you call that relationship?

Every place I have lived in has had a local ghost and/or monster legend. The most common were Women in White. (Remember that old urban legend where someone is driving down the road in the middle of the night and comes across a woman in white hitchhiking? They pick up the hitchhiker and set off to the woman's home. By the time they get to the woman's house, the driver turns to the hitchhiker but she has vanished. Turns out she has been dead all this time. He picked up a ghost.) In Virginia Beach, the town I grew up in the longest, our Women in White was on Elbow Rd. Even knew a guy who saw her.

What are some of your guy's favorites?

Some of the ones that are fascinating but scare the hell out of me are: Andy Blake, the FFVII cult, and that one tumblr driven con with the shitastic ballpit thing.

If you really want to get the shit scared out of you, check out Junko Junsui, and Catherine Brandenburg. (Be very careful around the former, because there's actually some amount of weird post-Soviet maneuvering in there, and there's some evidence to suggest the Junsui are in some way connected to the Black Widows of Dagestan.)

I know I saw a graphic for this floating around the internet, but I'm not having much luck finding it. So I float this to you, F!Sers; what's the generic term for soft drinks in the DC area?

I'm writing a fanfic atm. My protagonists are headed for a celebratory meal/night out as a group of ~9 people. They're in the DC area. The waitress at the pub restaurant (restaurant and bar? idk what they'd be called there) they go to asks who the designated drivers are, so they can receive wristbands that entitle them to free soft drinks. Really minor detail, but it's bugging me that I might use the wrong term for that area.
