Unrequited love fanfic recs

I am dying for fanfic recs involving unrequited love where one character is madly in love with another and despairs of the object of their affections ever returning their feelings, with a happy ending where the pined-over character does return the in-love character's feelings.

Slash, het, femslash, doesn't matter to me.

Triple bonus points if the characters are really close friends or best friends, and a big reason the first character doesn't confess their feelings is because they don't want to risk the super-important friendship.

I really don't care what the fandom is or whether I'm familiar with it. I just know that I've only seen this done the way I like in fanfiction, never in original fiction, and I've seen it done well in fanfiction a LOT. I know from experience that I don't need to know the characters well to enjoy it.

I'm having a giant thankful moment. Like I'm so glad I applied to that uni because I never thought I'd be accepted and I'm so glad I did that class that set me onto my career path and the circumstances around her could be better but my dog was totally worth the wait and all the work I'm putting into her.

Also really glad I was convinced to try cheesecake because holy shit amazing.

Sex/legality of marriage...is this true?

A (casual) friend mentioned the other day after the Supreme Court ruling that now that gay people can get married, she hopes asexual people can someday.

My initial reaction was to laugh, because that's ridiculous, no one's been trying to stop asexual people from getting married (unless they wanted to marry someone of the same sex).

But she swears that marriage isn't legal unless you have sex, and that you have to "consummate" a marriage for it to be valid. I always thought that was more of a religious thing than a legal one, but even if it is true, how is the government/whatever legal authority's in charge of that kind of thing going to know that you haven't had/aren't having sex? It's not like someone comes and observes you to make sure you're doing it.

Part of me thinks obviously it couldn't be true, but I do remember vaguely hearing about marriages being annulled because of a lack of sex, and my google skills are failing me here because I can't find the information I'm looking for online. Anyone know the answer?
