What was life at your college/university like?

Context: I recently read an AU set at a [US] college, and some of the depictions of college life weirded me out. Only two places to eat, the single crappy dining hall and the student union food court? All the seniors living in on-campus townhouses? Bumping into all these people you're trying to avoid? I wondered if the author was still in highschool or maybe from a different country.

But I realized maybe my own perspective was off. The fic was set at what sounded like a small, private college; I went to one of the largest universities in the US and graduated with 10,000+ other students. So tell me, F!S, what was it like where you went to school?

Is writing female friendships hard?

I've noticed in media, particularly shows and movies, female buddies, if you will, are far rarer than female/male friends or male/male friends. In the same show the female characters will be close with a male character, the male characters will be close, but the female characters hardly interact on a deeper level. It passes the Bechdel Test, but on a technicality.

Why is that? Is it harder to write female friendships?

Because I found a treasure trove of notebooks today, among them the ones from my three semesters with the funniest/smartest professor I had in undergrad.

Maybe someone here could help me track down a few stories I read years ago?

The first was from back in the old LJ days, maybe mid-late 2000s. It was a Harry Potter AU where Draco Malfoy was sorted into Ravenclaw but still not the nicest guy. I think it might have gone H/D at the end. The only specific scenes I can remember are one when some Slytherin scoffs at Draco for being in Ravenclaw but Crabbe/Goyle defend it as the smart people house, and Draco not knowing Remus Lupin is undercover circa book 6.

The second and third ones might be a longer shot. These were back late-90s early-2000s, and I didn't read either on FF.n or a journal site. The first focused on Saria in Ocarina of Time during the seven years link was sealed away. I'm pretty sure the narrator was, like, a Christian convert in Hyrule or something who found his way to the Forest Temple, but I don't think the story otherwise involved Christian themes. The other story was a comedy about a bunch of Nintendo characters going to a stereotypical Japanese high school together. I think Samus Aran might have been a magical girl or had miko powers.

I monthly advertise a pets event. I'm not an organiser, I just promo it on some forums and sights.

On one of these forums a person has noticed that last month we had an animal rights political group present. No big deal. This person says they "seem to be linked to PETA" and gives a bunch of hyperlinks to why PETA sucks.

I can't find any link between our local political group and PETA and this person hasn't provided any. Unless the fact they both use the phrase 'animal justice' sometimes?

Anyway, I want to clarify for anyone attending the markets that they're not an organiser they just applied for a stall, they don't appear to be linked to PETA and if a PETA Australia stall was applying I'd let the organisers know about their anti-pet stance.

Guy comes back with more links on why PETA is bad. I'm a bit more blunt this time, this party is not PETA and perhaps a different thread is more suited for political discussions?

Guy talks more about how if you dig the group is suss (no citation links) and also PETA is bad.

Trying to find an image, it was a fairly long illustrated list of the differences between things in Britain and things in America. One of the examples was of the different robins. American Robin was a kind of thrush, UK robin was a tiny bird that screams at you from hedgerows.

Once my roommate yelled at me for using what was apparently her bacon (I thought it was communal bacon cause at the time we shared food and I didn't know that the bacon had a clear delineation.) I apologized, explained how I had gotten the wrong impression, and replaced her bacon.

Since then I have always been sure to buy my own bacon and really all our food has been pretty separate except for condiments.

...And I just caught her using my bacon. I know its mine cause I buy a different brand. After she made a huge fuss.

I'm so bitter and petty. I am tempted to make the same level fuss she did. I probably won't, but oh boy am I tempted.

Question about breathalyzer locks

Have you ever had a breathalyzer lock on your car or known someone who has? Or do you know anything about them? Do they work well? I'd like to get one installed on my mom's car before she hurts herself or someone else. She's somehow survived this long without hitting anyone, getting in a serious accident, or getting a DUI, but if nothing changes it's only a matter of time. She literally has panic attacks if anyone tries to take her car keys--at least her therapists finally saw her freak out when they asked for the keys the last time she showed up to an appointment drunk.

They hadn't believed me until then, but when I asked about a lock, they said it sounded like a practical, workable solution, but (even though mom 's therapy is through an addiction treatment center) it wasn't something they had a lot of info on. Googling turns up more info on how to cheat the things or get them removed than reputable businesses in my area that'll install them, and I was hoping someone would tell me it'd be worth the bother.

From what I can tell it'd cost about $800 plus installation fees, which is a lot of money for me if they don't work as advertised

How do you deal with less open-minded family members?

So, I love my mom. She's not a bad person and I don't want to cut off contact with her (which it seems like is the advice anytime someone has any sort of issue with someone else) but sometimes dealing with her can be really frustrating.

She was raised by an incredibly conservative, "traditional" Catholic family. Because of this, she still has a lot of...less enlightened views. I don't think she actually hates anyone, but she does buy into a lot of racial stereotypes, and although (she says) she's okay with gay people (though she sometimes makes some pretty ignorant comments about them, too), she's super judgmental when it comes to any orientations beyond gay or straight, any type of relationship that doesn't fit the "two person exclusive romantic and sexual relationship" mode, anything beyond strictly enforced "traditional" gender roles (men are supposed to be "tough" alpha males [i.e., sexist assholes] or they're not "real men", women are delicate little flowers who need to be protected, etc.) and it's just really difficult to deal with at times. (Especially since I'm not straight and don't want a traditional relationship myself, so I can't help but take it personally.) Thank god my dad is significantly more open-minded and liberal, or I think I'd lose my mind.

She and I frequently clash over these topics, and I don't know how to keep it from happening. My dad and I have talked about it a lot, and he said that the things she says/believes bother him, too, but he keeps his mouth shut when she says them because it's not worth arguing over. And on the one hand, I totally see where he's coming from. I would like us to argue a lot less than we do, but at the same time, I find it really hard not to challenge her when she says something that's ignorant or bigoted and I feel like she NEEDS to be challenged on those issues. She can't handle it, though (which is probably why my dad finally gave up) and always reverts back to the "first amendment" argument that a lot of people like to use ("I can say whatever I want, so you can't say anything against it!" when free speech goes both ways; yes, she can have her opinion, and I'm allowed to think her opinion is narrow-minded and not very nice). That and the "well, I was just kidding, you're too sensitive and can't take a joke" excuse that people go to when they refuse to take responsiblity for the assholish thing they've said. She's also one of those "if you don't like the things I like, there's something wrong with you" people who refuse to accept that other people are different than her. In her mind, if you disagree with her you're wrong.

This has going on for so long, and I just don't know how to handle it anymore at this point. I don't think she has bad intentions (or at least I hope she doesn't), but it can be really hard to be around. I'm from the "you do you" millenial generation where pretty much everyone I know thinks that basically as long as you don't hurt anyone else, do whatever makes you happy, and that's always been my mindset, so sometimes I wonder if maybe it's a generational thing and we'll never really see eye to eye, but then I realize my dad is completely different than her, so...I don't know.

Anyway, I feel like I've said everything relevant to the situation and am starting to repeat myself, so...has anyone else dealt with relatives like this? How do you handle it?

I kinda half remember that the guy who proposed Para Handy wanted a specific edition. Do you remember which it was? I'm asking 'cause I know it is an old property (public domain, I think) and there are a lot of versions out there.
