I don't know if anybody here is a fan of the British television show Whitechapel (on ITV in the UK and BBC America in the US), but recently, we learnt from star Rupert Penry Jones that it hasn't be recommissioned for another series. We the fans disagree with that, so we've started a petition asking ITV to change their minds. If you could take 30 seconds to sign it, it'd mean a lot. Thank you.

I really, really dislike Allie Brosh. I think she glorifies and trades on her irresponsibility and destructiveness. Not just in the childhood stories, though a lot of those read as an adult trying to justify their past bad behavior to themselves by framing it as funny.
Now, before anyone says anything, I'll just get this out of the way: yes, I know, she has depression, and yes, I understand what that entails. I have clinical depression, which has been severe in the past, though currently mostly in remission due to medication.

And that's a lot of the problem. It really bothers me that someone so publicly lazy and scattered has kind of been declared the unofficial poster girl for depression. Looking back through her blog, there's a pattern of disorganization, dysfunction, irresponsibility, and inaction that suggests she's kind of a mess even when not depressed. Which isn't an issue in and of itself, because people like that get depression too, anyone can. But I feel like her acting as a sort of de-facto spokesperson for the illness reinforces a lot of negative stereotypes about depression, and depressed women in particular. Not all of us fit in that lazy, scatterbrained, "hot mess" mold. In fact, most of us certainly DON'T. We clean our houses and go to the bank and generally function as responsible human beings, unless we're, you know, sick. So it kind of bothers me that her being so public about both her depression and her bad behavior outside of it might confirm some people's beliefs that it's a character flaw, or endemic to one's personality, and thus someone going through a depressive episode just has to try harder and get their shit together. You also get less of a sense for how depression can completely wreck a person when you're reading an account from someone who wasn't particularly functional in the first place.

And I feel like the only depressed person who didn't think either of her posts were particularly insightful. Ask any depressed person, and we'll tell you that it's about a lack of feeling, pleasure, and volition, not a double helping of sadness. Hell, you probably wouldn't have to, because it's pretty common knowledge. And I know a lot of people don't know what depression really is, and it's helpful to have first-hand descriptions, but I feel like there are so many better and more clearly stated accounts out there, so I don't get why everyone is acting like she's given this amazing new information to the world instead of just building on what everyone else was already saying.

Meh. She's allowed to have a blog and write about whatever she wants, but I don't like how those posts exploded and brought her in to the spotlight, and I don't like how people paint them as being really educational and consciousness-raising when all they do is regurgitate what everyone else is saying, and even implicitly reinforce bad stereotypes. Rant over.

I recently went on a nostalgia kick and watched some old Peanuts stuff. I kind of realized I ship Lucy and Schroeder. I was surprised to see that Schroeder is sometimes implied to like Lucy back. She's so awful to him sometimes though!

So I have to share this because most of the fandom is on tumblr and I can't stand how stupid the whole thing is. and I want to vent somewhere where it's actually possible to read people's reactions and zomg talk

For one, I ship Levi/Eren. Now, I know a lot of people don't like it and that's fine. I know a lot of people ship it in a stupidly OOC-manner and write endless AUs about two people with a large age gap one of whom is old and bitchy and one of whom is young and innocent and they find this endlessly entertaining and fulfilling (no I'm not bitter about the millions of bad AUs nope) and I can accept that this floats their boat. I can definitely understand why some people find it skeevy because yeah we're talking large age gap. But I am so fucking DONE with people going on and on about abuse apologism holy shit. There was ONE instance where Levi was violent towards Eren, and that was putting on a show to save his life and probably not Levi's own idea. And THAT'S IT. He hasn't been abusive since then. He's been shockingly nice. He gave out pep talks and shit. People need to stop fucking guilting over this stuff because I don't care how many offended posts they make, I won't see it as abusive, I don't write it as abusive, and I won't stop shipping it. For that matter, people can stop vilifying Levi any day now. This is a series where you have man-eating monsters and canonical human scum of the earth, and so far we haven't actually seen Levi do much of anything but put his life on the line rescuing people. Get a grip, he's not Satan.

Also people need to stop shaming anybody who refuses to accept their headcanons that like 99% of the cast are trans* or genderqueer or genderfluid or everything else. The manga is crappily drawn, let's be honest. So fine, so there was that flippant cutesy comment about Hanji and refusing to disclose her gender when people asked because they couldn't tell from the drawing- but Nanaba?
I will say this honestly. These people are soldiers fighting for their lives against horrific monsters. They have an /extremely short/ life expectancy. I don't think anybody there gives a damn about what pronouns anybody uses, because people are mostly described as "dead now, too bad, so sad". I don't know, maybe this makes me insensitive, but I think they're really busy just trying to survive.

And lastly, I am sick of the rigid height rule going on in the Erwin/Levi pairing. Let Levi top sometimes gdi, it's just /boring/ at this point, and why is Levi always a sub. Shake it up a little!

A Sarcastic Commentary on the Canon by Nicholas Meyer

God, would I buy this book in a heartbeat. I just finished The Seven-Per-Cent Solution; it was okay, but the truly excellent part is the tongue-in-cheek footnotes. They're hysterical.

It is a frustrating pity that Watson did not set down the case. As it is, the Polish government's reward to Holmes for tracking an orangoutan through the sewers of Marseilles must join the number of tantalizing references the doctor makes to other cases he never saw fit to chronicle. We may infer (from the reward mentioned) that the case was brought to a successful conclusion; but how successful? If Holmes had succeeded entirely, might not the Polish government have awarded him the Order first class?

Actually, I found the whole book rather tongue-in-cheek, complete with popular culture references of all flavours. And I like this tone more than what I imagined it would be like - a super serious and full of h/c account of Holmes's ordeal in Vienna. (Although I like the h/c, too).

Is it, like, a thing? Or do people generally treat The Seven-Per-Cent Solution as tragic and serious?

I do agree that Eren could have more self restraint and that this is tied into a lack of dicsipline. But I do think that he is a very focused character and has clear goals which he obtains for the most part (and it's never easy for him to do so) so it's unfair to say he has no dicsipline.
I also agree with you that the ending of the anime is a poor portrayal of his character.

You're free to ship what you want, but the problem only comes when you warp canon to fit a ship. For instance, it's okay to say that Eren and Levi could have a meaningful relationship, but to say that they already do is really pushing it because there is no solid canonical evidence for it. And I don't mean evidence for Levi/Eren being in love with each other (because there's none whatsoever) I'm talking about evidence that they care for each or at least inte other in meaningful way.
