I'm a geeky chick in my late 20s. My younger brother is always insisting that a girl with as many nerdy interests as me should have no problems getting dates. Generally, I don't date because I'm lazy and don't want to, but it makes me wonder-- is it easier for geek girls to get dates, by merit of their geekiness?

I just found out that I'm going to Las Vegas sometime this fall/winter for a work trip, and I've never been before. I've never been particularly interested in going because gambling has never really appealed to me, but I've heard there are lots of other things to do there, I just don't know what they are. I don't HAVE to go on the trip but my bosses are paying for everything, so I figure I might as well!

I'm thinking there's a named user here who lives there, but I can't remember who it is, and I'm sure there are some other people who have at least been there so I thought you guys might have some more interesting suggestions than what I can find by googling.

So what fun/interesting things would you guys recommend I do/see? Thanks!

What are some movies/tv shows/games/etc that you dislike for weird/petty (to you) reasons? It can be because of something personal or something having to do with the media.

I hate The Rocky Horror Picture show because of the creepy "tricking someone into having sex scene". Traumatized my poor mind as a child.

I also hate Mary Poppins for an even sillier reason. When I was a kid, I wanted to watch some special on mammoths that was coming on Discovery Channel. But my older sister wanted to watch Mary Poppins and she being older, got to control the TV. She didn't even watch it all and I missed my special. D:< That movie has been tainted for me since.

What about you all?

Creator's Attitudes Toward Their Creations

So I've seen a few things, writing related that have said something to the effect of "you shouldn't see your characters as ____" or "your characters are your tools that's it". It kinda bothers me , to tell someone that because they think about their characters in a way that;s different then you, their characters are now "bad".

Like I can understand criticizing someone who has one character who's "their baby" and gets everything they want, and they think that because they love their character so much NO ONE can criticize them. But, if you are fond of all of your characters but are mature enough to realize that other people may not like them, what's the big deal there?

Different writers have different approaches to writing as well as feelings toward their creations, and IMO if they can write well and not make the world revolve around one character, then it shouldn't really matter how they view their own character.

As long as they can take and listen to criticism without taking it as a personal attack and they can treat all of their characters with some equality, they can think of their characters only as tools, or as their best friends for all I care.

What are your thoughts on this? Also are there any commonly used pieces of "writing advice" that you are unsure or even outright disagree with?

I'd like to re-pitch The Emperor's Soul. Relatively short (it's a novella), but plenty to analyze and discuss. It won the Hugo for novellas a few years back, even. It's about a woman who forges items magically. She's captured by the government and forced to rebuild the emperor's soul, because after a failed assassination attempt he's in a coma.

For cooldown: at least two months for general recs, I'd say. Tiebreaker losers should automatically go into the poll for next month.
