So, a few weeks back there was a "guilty pleasures" thread and someone brought up this series of books as a replacement to the Anita Blake series.

Started reading them. I'm loving the books so far, but I can see why it was labelled a guilty pleasure. It feels like I really shouldn't like these and I can't put my finger on why. Anyone reading these? Thoughts?

Also... Finished Book 2 today and was VERY unhappy by what happened to Ivy... 8(

Any book to movie films that you find didn't ruin characterization/plot?? I'm not talking about minor details - no adaptation is perfect - but some of them are just so off the mark it isn't even funny (Looking at you, Vampire's Assistant).

What do you think of the Olympics boycott?

So there's been calls to boycott the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia given Russia's treatment of LGBT folk (up to and including saying they will arrest any athlete, as well as any NBC reporter interviewing any athlete, who is perceived as being pro-gay.)

There's also been a lot of counter-calls which mostly seem to be built on bullshit.

There's also a petition to move the Olympics to Vancouver, which is a nice idea but I think is too late.

Personally? I don't think boycotting Sochi is enough. I've always found the Olympics to be a dubious attempt at promoting a myth of egalitarianism and the triumph of the human spirit. It's bullshit. It's all bullshit. It's one of the most heavily sponsored sporting events in the world, dominated largely by white people, run by a cabal of extremely wealthy bureaucrats with a history of antisemitism, and is usually used as a springboard by host nations to ramp up oppression on their own citizens (and those of other nations.) On top of that, the Olympics is just like every other sporting event -- a massive waste of money that disproportionately goes into advertisers' pockets (and the stadiums themselves are big drains on tax dollars that could be better spent on things like improving schools and infrastructure, while whole neighborhoods of largely lower-income housing are razed to make room for these ridiculously huge complexes) to build a shrine to very specific physical skillsets, all in the name of a form of entertainment that teaches nothing, inspires nothing, and means nothing. Don't just boycott Sochi. Boycott the Olympics, period. And while we're at it, boycott the World Cup, the Superbowl, everything on down to regional high school basketball. Sports is a cancer.

Secret 1 - Batman

[Picture is The Riddler and Poison Ivy from the "Batman" comics. The Riddler is a man with light skin wearing a green suit, a green bowler hat, a light green tie, green gloves and a purple shirt. He is carrying a cane with the interrogation mark on top. He is leaning on one foot, charismatically and smugly inclining his head and touching his hat with a hand, with a dartboard behind him with some darts stuck to it. Poison Ivy is a woman with light green skin, curly very bight orange-red hair reaching almost half her back and with leafy vines wrapped around her neck, part of her breasts, her wrists, her waist, her thighs, her ankles and her feet. She is sitting on a bed? with various blue and orange-yellow cushions lying around. There is a suitcase open next to her, with several stacks of green money bills spilling out of it. While I think Christopher Nolan did a good job with the new Batman trilogy, I will forever be disappointed by his choice of villains - except for the Joker. It makes me sad we will never get to see his versions of the Riddler or Poison Ivy. Because I think they would have been way more awesome than Bane or Ra's al Gul.
