I was all set to go home and get to some stuff in particular (like a note to a friend) but I ended up losing my internet til now because my mom was feeling particularly snappy and wanted to teach me a lesson about not respecting her.

But goddamn your trolling sucks. It's bad enough that I miss the days of rad!fem anon and SJW days. Trollometer hasn't bothered in a long time, with good reason, subtly and creativity is a lost art. Our current troll regulars, if you can even call them that, are so transparent they might as well have an account, since they rehash the same shit. Considering the anonymous nature of this community, this is unacceptable.

So go out there and do some quality trolling, because anything is better than what we have now.

Has anyone upgraded their iPhone to 8.0? I know, I should have waited but I went all in. I am confused on some things. You can now see a list of recent contacts when tapping the home button twice. But weirdly I'd like to go that away or find a way to edit it. I don't use a lot of texting or phone, mostly internet or apps. So to see the same recents is a bit 'make it go away'.

I've read the new Health app that got put on still has some bugs to work out, the HealthKit had to go into surgery for fixes first. http://www.tuaw.com/2014/09/17/the-ios-8-health-app-what-can-you-do-with-it-today/ But one item you can use is a Medical ID. You can view it when the lock screen is on, but I've never set up a passcode. So I can't view it on the lock screen. I take it there's no way to view it since there's no passcode? I realize it sounds like 'duh…' but hey, me and technology get weird.

Has anyone here had a book/movie/TV show/video game/etc that you refused to consume no matter what because of reasons (you didn't think you would like it, people bugged you too much about it, etc), BUT when you finally do watch/play/read it you end up loving it?

I recently started watching Game of Thrones. This is after a failed attempt to watch it last year (I only saw the first episode). A failed attempt to read the books. And a failed attempt to listen to the audiobook. But several friends and family have been bugging me about it. So I finally gave in. I am only on episode 7 but I am surprised by how much I am enjoying it (though I could do without the gratuitous sex scenes).

I had the same thing happen with Breaking Bad. So I think I am just going to stop fighting my siblings when they suggest something they think I will enjoy.

What about you all?

getting over a cold

so generally when i get a cold, my throat gets kinda scratchy for a few days, pretty sore, then the congestion comes on. so i've learned how to spot when i'm getting sick and can prepare for it.

this time it came on literally overnight but i'm hardly even functioning at this rate. through experience, whenever i tried to fight a cold, instead of helping me get better it would just drag it out? like i'd feel a bit better but i'd still be sick for DAYS. i tend to get better faster just riding it through.

but i'm down for the count this time. i can hardly breathe. what helps you guys get over a cold? or at the very least, what helps you feel better during it?

I believe that some mistakes aren't reflective of your essential character, but some mistakes are exactly--they reveal you for what you are. Sometimes you're put to a test of character, and you either pass or fail; if you fail, then yes, you are wanting in some way.

book club October winner

The winner is Red Sails in the Fallout by Paul Kidd! This will be the book we read for the month of October.

Discussion for Southern Fire is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, October 1 - that's two weeks from today. This is because I'm working on Tuesday. Keep an eye out for the November poll which will probably start around the same time, though I'll ask for some specific feedback a few days before the poll goes up based on experiences from the past two months.

In the meantime, what do people think of Southern Fire so far? I'm only about 3-4 chapters in, and I like the world and story, though the writing itself leaves a little to be desired imo. Some interesting questions are raised about gender and social constructs, especially with polygyny being portrayed as a universally positive thing (at least so far? maybe that will change later)
