How the fuck do you comfort crying women?

You try to offer advice and suggestions to fix the problem, and you're belittling her problem and not being comforting but instead trying to steam roll her.

You shut the fuck up and offer physical comfort like a quiet hug, and she want's you to say something.

You offer encouraging phrased like "It'll be alright" and "There there" and other sympathetic noises, and she needs you to be more involved and give her more direct support.

WHAT THE FUCK AM I SUPPOSED TO DO?!?!

Story Length

What's your average word length or the story length that feels most comfortable for your style? For fics that were shorter or longer, what did you do differently for those?

How long would it take you to write a standard getting-together story? Or, what kind of story can you tell in 500 words, 5000 words, 50,000 words, etc.?

Non-authors, what do you expect to get when you see a story of 500, 5K, 10K or 100K words?

I was talking to a non-American recently who didn't understand why we like baseball. I told them to watch "The Natural" and "The Bad News Bears". That was just my instant, almost reflexive reaction.

What are movies that make clear why something is good or appealing? Movies that explain a culture to people outside it? Movies that you can point to and say "Yeah, it's like that."

This seems a theme today, for self awareness of our existence. I got lost down the rabbit hole again. Has it been only that long? And I read my more recent posts, talking about my stress and the beginning of my mother's decline into dementia. How depressing.

Wild swans: Three daughters of China. It's the auto-biography of the author and the biographies of her mother and grandmother. Their lives cover pre-revolution, revolutionary and post-revolution China. It's bloody brilliant.
