Your First Period (Possibly TMI)

I was just randomly remembering some horrible episode of 7th Heaven where Ruthie didn't want to make a big deal out of it and then she got told "tough shit we're having a celebratory dinner where everyone knows about it no matter what you want". Which seemed horrible to me, and still does.

But to the point: How old were you when you got your first period? Did you or anyone else make a big deal out of it. Did you want anyone to?

I got my first period two months before my thirteenth birthday (a couple of weeks after September 11th, actually, so I had a fairly literal "there goes my childhood" month). I just told my Mom; she seemed a little dismayed/surprised to realize her baby just started menstruating, but I just put on a pad and went on with my life.

I really liked how liberal tumblr was, as I myself am liberal. However last night a post was commented on/reblogged over 20k times and the amount of insanity to it was just too much. Basically the post warned "PoC" to watch out/stay inside because "White people are upset!" that Romney lost-and that they were going to riot in the streets hurting/murdering any PoC they saw. Most of the people commenting agreed with it. The few people who brought some sanity to it were shouted down. Not everyone who voted for Romney were 'white', just because someone is a Republican it doesn't make them 'racist', and no one was going to start a giant mob and kill every 'black' person they saw.

It's only real purpose was to spread pointless fear and panic on a night that should have been full of celebration. Some people. ;/

Common Fanfic Plots You Absolutely Cannot Stand

So, yesterday, in the "what are your kinks?" thread, someone said that they love fics where a character is treated like crap and shunned by his/her friends, and the friends eventually realize how wrong they were and are sorry, but the character blows them off and refuses to forgive them and makes different friends.

I, on the other hand, was reminded that I hate that stock fanfic plot with the fiery passion of a thousand exploding suns. Which got me thinking: what stock fic plots/cliches/tropes do you guys absolutely hate? Whether they're specific to a particular fandom or occur in many fandoms, what kind of stuff brings out the "ugh" in you?

TW Attempted Rape on Keeping Up Appearances

So I'm rewatching Keeping Up Appearances because I remember it as a funny quirky show.

I rewatched the episode "Golfing with the Major". In summary, the Major invited Richard and Hyacinth to a golfing resort for a weekend. Major and Richard would golf while the wives entertained themselves. Only Mrs Major didn't come, but that's okay, Hyacinth can entertain herself and make new friends in her pushy comedic way. But oh no, the Major's old war wound is acting up and he can't go golfing. As a good host should, he's found Richard (who hates golfing and doesn't want to do any of this) a new partner. Luckily the old war wound (clearly fake by the way he's skipping about) doesn't keep the Major from inviting Hyacinth out for a drive in the lovely resort countryside. On this drive, he parks in a secluded area and begins groping Hyacinth while chattering on about how he likes older women. Hyacinth escapes his advances and makes it back to the resort hotel looking much the worse for wear and tells Richard they're going home now. On the way home, she mentions the drive to her husband only by saying that the Major "paid her a compliment". Cue credits.

An even shorter summary: the Major lures the couple away from home, seperates the wife, ditches the husband, forces himself on the wife, the whole thing is played for laughs, and the wife doesn't tell anyone what happened.

That was yesterday, and it really disturbed me. Mostly because of the 'it was played for laughs' aspect. I sure as fuck didn't laugh. I keep fantasizing about my OCMarySues jumping in to rescue Hyacinth and making sure the phrase 'no means no' is etched into the Major's soul (or forehead, depending on the OC).

I also keep wondering if Hyacinth has some really rosy rose-tinted glasses about people of 'a certain social standing' or if she's just couldn't face what had happened. Is she nuts or was she traumatized? Did she ever tell Richard what really happened? Did the Major ever get invited to another candlelight supper?

Or maybe I'm putting to much thought into an old show... :/

Drug Testing?

I was wondering if anyone on fandomsecrets has had any experience with drug testing? I will be tested for a potential new job, and I'm kinda nervous. I don't do any drugs, but I was around my friends while they were smoking weed. (that was about a month ago, if it makes any difference)

Am I unnecessarily freaking out, or am I screwed?
