I've seen several times that describing someone as "transgendered" is bad and you should say "transgender" instead. But in some contexts "transgender" just sounds wrong grammatically and "transgendered" sounds more correct. Why is adding the -ed to the end such an awful thing?

So I am going on an inventory/purge cycle with my books (yet another one), and though I don't have nearly as many as I used to, people's eyes still boggle when they see my bookshelves. Which look disastrous and untidy, and I am therefore going to make them tidy and neat. In small increments.

However. In going through my books, I am rather disappointed at some of the things that have survived my many moves, and mourning some of the things that have not. My biggest disappointment is that I don't read nearly as much as I used to (nor nearly as much as I should). Instead I end up killing my free time (what little I have of it) playing Sims or on Fandom!Secrets. As a result, there are something like FOUR books on my shelves that I've bought in the last four years. And way more fiction/cheap paperbacks than non-fiction, IMO. But I wasn't a great fan of much non-fiction when I was younger. I am now, but mostly I read library ebooks, so.

What surprises have you encountered when clearing out/organizing your bookshelves, F!S?

Okay I know people are going to yell at me so i'll be careful to word it in a way that doesn't sound offensive.


Growing up I'll say that I've always been rather sheltered. I am female and I had the knowledge and understanding of the problems society makes against females. But this afternoon I read about a group (Autism Speaks) that claims to be in favor of a group that supposedly is trying to help people like me but in actuality is hate group against them. I knew they sucked before but reading about how deeply hateful they were and how much they seem to want to eradicate people like me. It shook me , to the point where I almost wanted to cry.


...I feel like it's somehow wrong that I had this experience over being disabled rather than being female.

I wrote a really popular story. It still gets a lot of hits and comments, even though it wrapped up over a year ago. I promised a sequel. I want to write it, but I'm terrified of the readers. The fandom has gotten so much meaner and it seems like everyone considers this ship sunk. I hate that I haven't written it yet but I'm more worried now I never will. I'm really sorry, readers.

If we're talking oppression olympics I score pretty high ('only' got middleclass and white going for me, which okay I admit is a big only), but I've always found there's one aspect of me that's most affected my ability to be treated equally and get on in the world, and lead to the most stress.

Which is being awkward and terrible with people.

Anon for obvious reasons, because pointing this out in any feminist or queer friendly space is death to your credibility and inevitably leads to you getting shouted down.

Not saying it doesn't suck, or effect your life greatly but...It's really not related to privilege.

Because skipping your period can be a sign that something is very wrong medically. While it's usually stress related, it can be a sign that something major is wrong possibly including hormonal disorders, or even a sign of certain types of cancer, iirc.

I haven't skipped a period in years, even when I was having my first finals in 7 years + a close family member going through cancer treatment + having a [formally] very close friend essentially go 'IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT I OVER REACTED, AND STILL AM!' every day for multiple weeks [...It was a really shitty time]. So this is really abnormal, even more so since it's more than one month.
