Honestly, I've never understood why there has to be conflict between those things. I've always liked both of them and I don't see any reason it should be a competition, but people seem to really view it as a zero-sum game sometimes. It does disappoint me that hard SF - or you could even go broader and say traditional SF - has gone into eclipse the way it seemingly has, but I don't think you can put that at the hands of fantasy. It also disappoints me that the kind of fantasy that's popular isn't really to my taste. Just the way the cookie crumbles sometimes.

(Maybe that's all because I've always kind of preferred softer SF over hard SF, though)

I think character bashing is really stupid but I don't know if people owe respect to a character if they don't like the way the character is written. Hmmm.

Ok? I need a little more context to understand why this is a secret. Are you in a circle of people who are obsessed with the game and judge those who have no interest in it harshly? Will you be kicked out onto the streets if you don't show interest in the game? Will your partner break up with you? Is it the only thing your best friend ever talks about and you dont' want to let him/her down?

One of the purposes of fiction is to offer truths about life and inspiration for the future. There's nothing wrong with drawing a hopeful and meaningful message from a TV series and applying it to your own life. Regardless, I wish you better times ahead.
