New Laptop?

All right, I've seen threads like this in the past, and was hoping I could get some advice on buying a new laptop? At the moment I'm fairly clueless about what type would suit me, I just know what sort of things I want to use it for.

- One of the main things I'd like to do is run Playstation/Sega Saturn emulators (my current PC can't handle this)
- I think it'd help to have a 'proper' graphics card, not just the basic Windows integrated one
- I'd also prefer it to have a CD drive (so no ultra-skinny smartbook/tablet type things)
- I use Photoshop and SAI a lot
- I don't care about lightness/portability since I won't be taking it outside the house (which also means battery life isn't a huge issue)

Based on all that, is there any particular brand/model/etc. I should aim for/avoid?

I always get reviews from a particular person, and while I appreciate them, I'm beginning to think she's just being nice because every single review is along the lines of "this was really good" or "I like this."

If she's just being short and sweet and means it, great. But I'm concerned she's just trying to be nice, and I'd rather she be honest, especially if she does see something wrong with that. So how does one address this without being a bitch to someone who was just trying to be nice either way?

How many of you have heard about Inkstand? Apparently it's the ~revolutionary new website~ that will absolutely devastate tumblr when 1/4 of all tumblr users move to it.

Top ten reasons to switch to inkstand!

1. One of the developers is a trans woman, which automatically means that it's better!

2. Inkstand made a huge announcement before it even got into beta, because there's no way that that could be an issue! It's not even in alpha yet, but who cares?

3. People will still be able to hoard urls, after all "we’ve received concerns about this policy, so as of this moment, we haven’t got a clear policy besides “we want to address this.”" Is anyone else a little concerned by "we want to address this"? No one else? Okay.

4. "We’ll handle things on a case by case basis so as to determine whether or not something constitutes actual hate speech, as well" Ah yes, because you'll definitely have enough time and staff to do that, mmm-hmmm.

5. They're not going to work with the xKit guy because he's "problematic".

6. You can't have sideblogs, but you can have up to 20 blogs (50 if you're a premium user) that all have their own dashboard, because that's somehow different from tumblr? I'm not joking on this, I legitimately don't get how having different (not side) blogs on inkstand is different from having different (not side) blogs on tumblr.

7. The community will be in charge of deciding what's "obscene" or not, "Community as in the whole of Inkstand. We’re thinking of having a section of the site where reported posts and users can be looked over and considered by the community at large, to decide what should happen for some things." because there is literally no way that those can go wrong. ("As for historically censored things, we’ll abide by the community’s ruling and the team won’t treat them as a special case. We trust that the community’s judgement.")

8. Similarly, slurs will not be allowed in URL's, unless they're reclaimed slurs, in which case "the community" will be allowed to vote on whether or not they should be allowed or not. Because, literally, there is no way that that could go wrong! ("We’re thinking of putting slurs which might have been reclaimed to a vote, allowing the community to determine what will and will not be allowed in URLs.")

9. None of them have ever done anything like this, but who cares! It's "a learning experience. We have a clear end goal, and high standards for making this all work, and we have the means to make sure it does.", so experience doesn't even matter lmao.

10. It's better than tumblr! Even though it's not actually up yet, and we have no idea what it's going to look like! Also, this is totally reminiscent of the Arkh Project, or Dash-con, nope!

Are campus activities in a decline?

I haven't been in college for a while, having graduated a year and a half ago, but it seemed to me that no one ever did anything in the activities. Trying to get people to participate in the ones I was technically in charge of was like pulling teeth, and the people who did want to do stuff basically just stuck to bake sales.

In my case, however, not only was it a small school, most of us were from the area, meaning we all went home on the weekends - ergo, we didn't really have much incentive to make friends with people. So I wondered if that had more to do with it, or if in general college activities are quieter? I do wonder if Facebook and twitter have anything to do with it as well - after all, before Facebook you generally joined activities to get to know people, whereas Facebook makes it pretty easy to do that as well.

Thoughts? Do you like the idea? Don't like the sound of it? Think it will kill the theater industry? Or infinitely improve your chance of seeing new movies?

For me, I love it and I hope it does replace the theater industry as we know it. Sure, it does suck that like Blockbuster people will be having to find alternative jobs. However, it's infinitely more convenient and I would pay to see more movies streamed onto Netflix than the spare few I go see in theaters on a stiff chair with god knows what stuck on the floor and seats.

I thought I'd just start a profile for the heck of it, and then seriously try using it and filling out my profile after I got more of my shit together. But I've gotten quite a bit of messages, a few of which I've been responding to, but I'm not into seeing any of these people. And I connected with someone, and they want to see me soon. I said yes, but now I'm not sure I want to. Is there any way I can turn this guy down while still keeping a connection with him, and not seeming like I was leading him on?
