Wing Commander was a great space drama about starfighters in a war earth isn't exactly winning. People love, people die. Anthropormorphic cats menace the world. Seems legit, right? Hell, this game series has Mark fucking Hamil in it! HOW CAN YOU MESS UP A SCIFI WITH MARK HAMILL!

Easy! BY NOT PUTTING HIM IN THE MOVIE AND REPLACING HIM WITH FREDDIE. MOTHERFUCKING. PRINCE. JR! BUT ADDING IN SOME VAGUE JEDI-LIKE BULLSHIT THAT ACTUALLY WASN'T IN THE GAME AT ALL AND MAKING THE ALIENS LOOK LIKE SHIT!

So, I'm living with my family for the next few months (I work full time and everything, just to be clear). They have absolutely no idea about my fannish activities or the fact that I read fanfiction, and I am absolutely adamantly not comfortable with ever letting them know about it.

I've been dying to order a couple of old vintage zines on ebay that have stories that aren't available anywhere online, but I'm not about to order them to my home address in case they get opened (my family isn't big on privacy, which has always totally fine with me in all areas except fandom, so asking them to not open my mail is going to just attract even more attention).

So, I've decided to rent a P.O. box for a short time, and order some zines to the P.O. box and pick them up there without my family knowing about the P.O. box or ever knowing what I bought.

I was just wondering if anyone knows of ways this can screw me over. Like, will I get a big awkward notification at our home address mail about my newly-opened P.O. box that will have my family going "what P.O. box?" Could anything sent to my P.O. box ever get re-routed to my home address? I checked the website and it doesn't say much about privacy from people at your home address, only privacy from outsiders.

Watched the third ep just now, and... WTF is wrong with Mars's face? She's super pretty a few times, but mostly it looks like whoever animated her face fell asleep halfway through. The weird issues with the animation are getting worse instead of better, Mercury looked like a creepy alien at one point.

Other than that, I liked the episode a lot! Fun and fast paced and lol at Moon making love eyes at Mars. So cute. How can you spot a Sailor Soldier? Just drag Moon around and wait until she calls a girl pretty! Worked for Mercury and Mars now.

My corner of fandoms holds "drabble trees" every so and then. The rules are simple: each new drabble must begin with the last sentence or at least the last words of the previous drabble and the idea is to stay as close as possible with it. Swaping singular/plural, masculine/feminine forms and past/present tenses is accepted, as well as changing a character's name for another's, as well.
Lately some players have taken the "swaping names" leeway a bit further and it's driving me nuts. Changing "the young (female) student" to "the young (male) lion" makes me rise my eyebrow. And how the fuck is "time to own your decision is coming" is as close as possible to "Shinkansen number 325HJ42 is coming"??

Am I the only one who does this? I get so frustrated I bin them, then I dig them back out because they're fun or interesting.

The latest to be de-binned is YU-NO, a Japanese adventure game from the '90s in which the son of a missing scientist discovers his father's time machine and tries to find him somewhere in the timestream. It's a very jigsaw-puzzle sort of game, where you collect items and information in one branch of time and use them to solve puzzles elsewhere, and it can be quite satisfying to snap the pieces into place and start to figure out what's going on. (It also has the most unique version of time travel I've ever seen in fiction, with stunning implications if you can understand how it works.)

Unfortunately, the point-and-click mechanics can be a bit unwieldy at times. I spent half an hour clicking around a room, including multiple clicks on the clutter on a desk, before I realized I was specifically supposed to click on the phone. It's also a game from the time period when it was hard to sell anything resembling a visual novel if it didn't have smut in it--to its credit, it at least tries to integrate the sex into the plot, but you'll be rapidly skipping through a few scenes if you're not into women with boobs bigger than their heads.

Hardcore Gaming 101 claims this is one of the best games ever made. I'm not sure I'd agree with that, but it's certainly an interesting one. I just wish it were a little more user-friendly.

I am Dutch and I just came back from England and it was a bit of a culture shock in the cycling department. In Holland almost everyone cycles no one wears a helmet or lycra costumes which everyone I saw in England seemed to do. So I was wondering great and mighty people of fandomsecrets: Do you cycle? Is cycling an excepted thing where you are from? Do you have to wear a helmet?

got a new job recently

I've spent the last 2 weeks getting to know my coworkers and I really like a lot of them and get along with all of them....except one.

This guy is 23/24, white, financially privileged, and has given himself the title of "token sassy office gay". Our office is large and the work we do is very progressive, so I actually have quite a few gay colleagues, but he is the only one in the "young and fun entry level" social circle. He's decided to use that niche to be, frankly, a huge ass. His most outrageous comments generally occur at post-work happy hours or when we're all outside eating lunch on the patio, and not quite so much in the actual office.

Some typical comments:

"Girl, your hair is not cute today, looks like someone woke up laaaate and didn't have time to get it together."

"Mmm if you prefer white wine to red, you need to either grow up or kill yourself, cause bitch this is not college."

"I feel like I need a list to keep track of all the women who want me to give them a makeover."

"Every time I meet someone new, I hope they'll have hot gay friends but they're always fucking ugggg."

"Ugh, women. I'll, like, never understand how someone could be attracted to you."

"All you bitches need to follow my lead."

"These are my office bitches, and I am their queen."

"Honey, please, you are not gonna have anyone buy you a drink in a button up. You look like a goddamn lesbian."

I'm not sure how much of his behavior is his actual personality and how much of it is an exaggerated act. But I think he gets away with it because no one wants to risk being called homophobic if they address his bullshit. But being gay and being an asshole (or "sassy") are in no way related. In this case, he happens to be BOTH and I feel like no one knows how to critique one without disparaging the other.

Like I said, I'm new, but I don't want to put up with his bullshit and misogyny. Tips for how to tactfully call him out?

ETA: He also seems to want to be the "proud vegan" stereotype who won't shut up about how healthy his food choices are and how he gets so much protein through plants and has so much energy and 'who would put garbage like mcdonald's into their bodies' & blahblahblah. But these comments are more irritating than enraging.

ETA2: I'd like to try a non-HR approach first, mostly because I don't think his intention is necessarily to be hurtful or rude. I think he has deluded himself into thinking (with the help of the media) that all straight women want a sassy, flamboyant gay best friend like Jack from Will & Grace. I know straight women can be a big part of creating this problem, because many DO want to compartmentalize gay men into the gay best friend role. I'm not sure it bothers all of my female coworkers, some might find it funny, but I would guess that it certainly bothers some others.

It's not Weasley-Malfoy wank related, but RL related. I noticed that I prefer socializing with financially secure people. They're more relaxed, settled, generally have good manners. Also they can afford to spend some money when we hang out in cafes, movies or go on trips. No offence to people with money troubles.
