Replacing an iPod - Need opinions

So, my iPod's battery seems to finally be dying. I have an older model with the wheel on front. It was the bigger one that you could watch movies on and had a bit more memory than the originals.

I'd like to get something new but I'm not sure iPod is the way to go. I dislike touchscreens and I also want a wheel for the volume (rather than up and down buttons) because I change the volume constantly when I listen to music.

Being able to watch a video would be great but not a deal-breaker. Does anyone have suggestions? If I get a non-Apple device, would iTunes work or would I have to convert everything?

When you're at home and someone cold calls you, what do you do? I usually just hang up. I'm not rude, I don't curse them out, I just don't speak to them. I imagine it is a sucky, horrible job, and I don't really think they need to abused because it's the work they have. But just because the company you work for somehow got a hold of my phone number, that doesn't mean you deserve any of my time.

Computer/Gaming woes

So I got 80 hours into Dragon Age Inquisition, and all of the sudden, the game starts lagging terribly. Occasionally it would have a minute or two where it'd go slow, but I had been playing just fine on Medium graphic settings, pretty smooth (though the loading screens were always long). But yeah, 80 hours in, and I'm getting six frames per second, even less.

Confused, I give it a day or two, but the problem doesn't sort itself out. I start poking around and notice I got a Code 43 on my graphics card, so Windows is saying it disabled it (presumably, that's what caused the problem, but I can't even be sure since I hadn't checked anything ever before). I try to update things, do everything I know how (which isn't much) and nothing. The 43 miraculously goes away at one point, but Dragon Age still was slow, and then the 43 went back.

Now I'm searching for solutions to problems that are WAY above my head. I have no idea what to do. I don't think anything updated recently because I'm supposed to get notifications asking me permission when anything updates, and I hadn't gotten those (though I tried updating everything after the problem, no luck). I don't really have the money or time to take my computer in. I only got the laptop five months ago, so presumably I should have warranty, but I'm also abroad for school right now and I have no idea if I can do anything about it here.

So frustrated, even though for all practical purposes it just means I can't play my game, but it's been my stress reliever lately, and instead it's just piled on more.

Sorry to rant, this was meant to be a computer complaining thread. D:(though if anyone has any advice that'd be greatly appreciated too)

Weird encounters

So, I had this strange encounter this week.

I'm on the tram, old dude gets on, and sits next to me, despite half of the tram being empty.

dude: I tried to swipe my pass card, but it's not working - do you know what's causing it?
me: nope, sorry, I have the ten-rides card
dude: well it's the one for pensioners, you see...
(dude, do I look like I'm 65....how do I know how pensioners cards work...)
me: I don't know how that works.
dude: Are you Jewish?
me: Uh, no...
(fair enough,I've been guessed pretty much ever ethnicity except black African and Scandinavian..but this is a bit...direct)
dude: Lots of Jewish people in Antwerp...
me: Yeah, I know...
dude: Do you know the Appelbaums?
me: Uh, no...
dude: The Schwartzes?
me: don't think so.
(dude, I just told you I'm not Jewish, and even if I were, pretty sure I wouldn't know ever family by name)
dude: *continues to sum up a bunch more Jewish names*.
me: don't think I know any of them.
dude: well, you see, I know a lot of people.
me: uh-huh, well have a good day, I need to get off now.

He was actually quite cheerful and friendly...it was just very odd.

I'm curious what are some things that people collect.

I have a massive collection of souvenir spoons from all over the world and a few that I've inherited from relatives.

I also have an assortment of Wizard of Oz collectibles including ornaments, dolls, posters, figurines, musical boxes, and books.

The latest collection I've started is the Harry Potter books in different languages. I have English (British and American), Latin, Spanish, Japanese, Dutch, German, Czech, Hungarian, and French.

Captain America comics or movie in German language?

Anyone know where/how I can get any of these? The problem is that because the first movie is a WWII flick, every time I search for this online (including Amazon and Kat), I just get redirected back to a generic description of Captain America in English, or a German character separate from Captain America altogether but regularly compared to him. My search-fu is not up to par for this. Help?

Het Erasure?

I was reading over yesterday's secrets and someone made a comment about "het erasure." Now, that wasn't their only point (and I did feel some of the others were legitimate), but this really stuck out to me because…does anyone seriously believe this is a thing?

What I mean is, heterosexual romance composes 99% of mainstream media, no matter your race or ethnicity.

Does anyone think "het erasure" is a real phenomenon? I'm just a bit baffled as to where someone would conceive of this.

Day of the Brain Farts

Just wanted to share this because it was a thing that happened.

Before class today, I had a conversation with several of the other grown-ass adults (well, early 20s) sitting near me, where we all somehow spontaneously failed at leap year-ing. At first someone asked if it was this year, then I said the next one was in 2018, then someone else asked how to calculate it without using a calendar, then I realized my mistake and said it wouldn't happen until 2014...it was a hilarious minute-long clusterfuck until it finally clicked in my head: "oh, it's divisible by 4!"

Then an hour later somebody mixed up Marx and Freud, derailing the discussion, and we all (teacher included) spent a moment trying to figure out what had happened and who had misspoken.

Didn't realize our brains could melt this much in the two days classes were canceled. :P

Old fandoms you revisit

What are some older fandoms you have revisited recently? Did they disappoint or were they as awesome as you remember? Are they still churning out fic or dead as door nails?

I decided to look up some old CSI fic because of a comment on here a couple days ago. As far as I can see, fic is still being made but I don't know any of the current canon (I stopped watching when Grissom left). I was able to find some of my old favorite fics! I remember that I was disappointed by the lack of Nick whump (not many post Stalker/Grave Danger fics) and that disappointment is still there. :(

The DBZ fandom is fairly dead and man...the old fic does not hold up. But in my 16-17 year old mind that fic was the epitome of great writing. At least I have the memories. :P

I have an odd feeling about one of my friends. I don't fancy her, I can tell, but it's not the way I feel about most of my friends. I want to be around her all of the time. When I'm not, I miss her, even if I talked to her yesterday. When I'm unhappy, I go to my friends, but only she can cheer me up immediately just by responding. I keep thinking about her. I want her to be in my life forever. It's all the obsession of a crush, but without the butterflies. It doesn't seem common. Do any of you ever feel this strongly about a friend? What might be behind it?

Bridal Shower brain melt

Well, my cousin is getting married next month, and I got invited to the bridal shower (or as I managed to type it earlier birdal shower because I've had birds on the brain for the last month and a half). I've only been to one bridal shower before, and it was my own. It was also a couple's shower in which there were almost as many guys in attendance as women. The one I'm invited appears to be a lot more traditional. I was invited to one last year but didn't go because A) It was too far away and B) I was broke as a joke. This time around, it's a little closer, and I have some money. I just have no idea what to do with myself (other than bring a gift and resist the urge to smuggle in a flask of Jack Daniels). Any advice?
