Canon self-referencing its own tropes without breaking the 4th wall

What are some of your favorite examples of a show or book or whatever making a joke about its own set of tropes or cliches, but doing so without breaking the fourth wall and having a character or narrator explicitly address the audience or acknowledge they are fictional characters.

For example, a character in a DC or Marvel comic discussion how dead superheroes always come back to life = yes. Deadpool telling the audience that his writers will bring a character back to life after this arc is finished = no.

That feeling when, after reading a bunch of literature (and deciding to postpone the start of therapy because my insurance is changing next year, so there isn't much point in choosing a psychiatrist I may not be able to see after December), you come to the realization that you were the victim of a predatory covert narcissist.

She fits the profile like a well-tailored suit. The pathological need to present herself as a victim. The almost Mary-Sue like past where she was abused by everyone she ever encountered (but somehow never seeming any worse for wear). The fake vulnerability, presenting herself as an emotionally fragile person (and thus making those around her feel needed). The projection (she's demonized other people for the exact same behavior she engages in).

I feel so...stupid. For falling for it.

I know it's not fair to call myself that, because (at least according to the literature) these are people who have perfected their techniques for taking advantage of the empathy and compassion of other people. But I still feel like on some level I should've seen it coming.

Besides stupid, I feel angry. So angry. I want to punch things. And at the same time, a part of me is like "she was such a piece of shit, why are you even upset? Just be glad she's gone!"

Has anybody else had to kick somebody out like this? Is this kind of being-angry-at-yourself-even-though-you-know-it's-not-really-your-fault thing normal?

It's been a while!

Dreamland: WOO HOO! BODY SWAP! I loved the other actor playing Fletcher. He was hilarious and great at playing Mulder. These episodes were hilarious and a bit gross (with the people/thinks being smooshed together). I really liked it but I don't understand how Scully can still be so doubtful of everything.

How The Ghosts Stole Christmas: Loved this one too. I liked the set design. Though, why in the world would they split up! That is the number one rule. The music was also fantastic.

Terms of Endearment: The only thing of note to me from this episode was how many actors were in it (including Bruce Campbell). And how goofy it was.

The Rain King: Did not like this episode much. It was just pretty boring except for that cow scene. Mulder's face was great.

SR 819: I loved how long Skinner stayed on the phone with the creepy voice. Who does that?!? I loved the terrible computer disease graphics they had. Classic! The hobo Krycek (aka my fav ONE ARMED PSYCHO)! I am so excited that asshole is back. Though, I am annoyed he is controlling (?) Skinner.

Tithonus: X-Files really likes old dudes who can see/predict death. And they are always so sad. :(

Two Fathers (watching currently): The Smoking Man is so dramatic about everything. And his son (as far as I know at this point), is such a jerk. Though, I am glad that Cassandra is back. I can't wait to see where this goes. Also, the scene where the guy rips the other guy's face off is gross.




edit: When does the show start getting terrible? And which of the terrible stuff can I avoid?

Mother is trying her hardest to sweep it under the rug. First she tried to pretend nothing happened, then wrote a half-assed apology that was all about how she was walking on eggshells, how she can't be expected to change, how my wife is "taking me from my family." Which that last one is especially a red flag now. My wife and I have a healthy relationship. We help each other up when we're down and such, but don't expect the other to magically cure our problems.

I've learned that anyone jealous of a happy, healthy relationship probably realizes on some level that it means less control for them. It's tiring--she keeps trying to force me into contact. But I'm tired of being insulted and put down, of every little thing being picked at as a "joke." And I've told her before I don't like it, to which she says I need thicker skin.

I'm tired of it and wish she'd leave me alone and quit trying to force contact.
