It is entirely possible that your "den mother" is old enough to have read said trashy action novel years and years ago, and was pulling from it unintentionally.

I'm sorry you got made fun of. Sailor Moon is glorious! But especially depending on the era in which you watched it, a lot of people just don't "get" anime/animated shows. Pity them for missing out on the wonder and joy!
