I haven't been in the fandom much recently, but I've been having a lot of cravings. Who out there is writing really, really good Harry Potter fics, currently or in the past two/three years? Slash recs would be awesome, but anything that's top-quality is appreciated.

Is it spring-y there where you are? And what have you been doing?

It is really spring-y here. The sun was shining and it was warm today. There's still some ice on the ground, but other than that you can really feel spring in the air. I've been out on walks today, just enjoying the weather.
Right now, I'm watching Top Gear and finishing up my RP-maps!
(I am the Dragon Age RP-anon from last week, thanks a bunch again two anons and Loracarol and Cassandraoftroy for helping me, I have got it alll figured out, yay)

What are your favorite and least favorite tropes in fic/film/tv/games/books?

In fic I love the "Character A pines for Character B and Character B pines for Character A and everyone knows is except for them."

In all media I hate anything involving long lost family members appearing that everyone thought was dead. This is especially annoying when the character not having any family is integral to the character's personality and plot lines. Teen Wolf.

Help me, nice people of fandom secrets.

I kind of like someone. A lot. I don't usually like people of that sex and I'm not sure I could enjoy sleeping with them. If this was just about me, I'd simply try, but they've had bad relationships before. It would not be fair to tell them I like them and then drop them after getting in bed with them.

How do I figure this out? Porn doesn't do much for me and I don't want to go out and sleep with some stranger, especially since that wouldn't necessarily prove anything.

I don't want to talk to them about it before I'm reasonably sure, because they've been hurt before.

Weird worries about Rivers of London

I love this series like nobody's business, but man, do I have way too many apprehensions about it.

I. Since (according to Aaronovitch) the series was initially supposed to be a TV show love child of DW and a police procedural, I'm afraid that it's going to go on indefinitely, have its plot be fucked and fuck itself up, and end up in a "to be continued" with no actual continuation. I hate having my favourite book series ending up unfinished (unless they consist of stand-alones).

II. The TV series that's going to be made. DUDE, am I apprehensive about this. I want to cringe into a black hole when I think of all the social justice issues that can be brought up, all the hate rabid fans will send to Aaronovitch, all the stupidity and insanity the actors will go through. I'm afraid that Aaronovitch will have Arthur Conan Doyle'd after that.

And then again, I hate it when TV shows are made based on the book series that are currently being written. I just know it's going to mess everything up.

Trying to wipe and get rid of a computer

I'm getting rid of my old (old old oooold) PC clone desktop.

First, I wanted to see if I could donate it before I brought it to the county recycling center, but places that take donated computers have minimum system requirements (understandable). I think my computer already fails on RAM and memory (despite having two hard drives) but I'm still curious whether the processor is good enough. The place with what appears to be the lowest standards (and also the most conveniently located for me to drop things off) asks for Pentium III or better or equivalent. Anyone know if an AMD Athlon processor is equivalent to a Pentium III? (Google is so not helping with this. I just get old forum threads discussing which manufacturer's processor is better for gaming vs. regular use.)

Second, any idea how to wipe the hard drives if I can't get the computer to boot from a CD? The instructions I've read say to use the Windows CD to format the hard drive and/or use some downloaded software to completely purge everything. Problem is, these methods involve booting from a disk/CD/flash drive but the computer won't run setup when it starts even though I press the appropriate key (and a bunch of other keys.) I've tried simply putting in the Windows CD and double clicking on Startup.exe but it doesn't give me formatting or partitioning as an option.

At this point, I'm about ready to grab a screwdriver and physically remove the drives and see if I can find a place that will shred them.

Fair warning for anyone offering explanations: I'm no computer whiz. (Although I feel like I used to be better at this sort of thing. I used to know how to use DOS for goodness sake and now I'm like "Bwuh?" at every part of this process. What happened to me?)
