Simply because powerstructures are self perpetuating does not mean there is an intentionality involved in the actions of everyone within them.

It makes you look tremendously silly when you disregard this and start making random accusations about the real motive of people within them, suggesting they don't actually believe what they're saying and are part of some evil plot to oppress you etc.

It's my birthday!

And I want to talk about Thanksgiving, since every year I barely manage not to get my birthday on the same day.

I had this anthropology teacher who used Thanksgiving as an example of possibly the closest to universal practice in the US. Then he went on to talk about how aside from the Turkey and cranberry sauce, all the side dishes at Thanksgiving are usually informed by the company's tastes.

So in my house we have 3-cheese salad, vinaigrette (which is a Russian beet salad), white salad (hard to describe, but it's mostly mayo), herring, tomatoes and whole potatoes, no mashed. What kind of food is on your Thanksgiving table?

How did your first impression of [insert work here] influence your perception of it in odd ways?

For example: if the first episode you watched of a show you now love was a really weird, off-the-wall, out-of-the-ordinary episode, were you weirded out when the rest of the episodes were very different from that first impression/does that episode have a disproportionate impact on the general tone of the show for you?

If you first read the book for a college lit class, did that influence your opinion of the book in a way very different from that of most people who read it?

If you were exposed to a fanvid, or fanfic, or general fandom for a work long before you actually watched/read the canon, did the fandom interpretations color your impression of the work very strongly?

The appeal of Dark!Character fic

You know how some darkfic is of a particular kind where a character who is canonically a good guy is portrayed in a really dark light while still staying true to most of his/her personality? Especially when the dark!character is one side of a pairing, which is transformed into a really fucked up abusive pairing even if the pairing is quite positive in canon? I don't mean deconstruction fic, where a character's canon actions are interpreted in a dark way (like what happens to Twilight, etc), but where the author knows perfectly well that the character is not actually that dark in canon, but creates a sort of Evil Alternate Universe except instead of the whole universe being full of darker duplicates, only the one character is dark (and not necessarily full-on evil, just distinctly darker than canon)?

I LOVE this. I love the shit out of it, but I don't know why it turns my crank so well. Does anyone else love this too? Do you know why you love it, and can you explain to me why you love it? Because I can't figure out why I love it.
