I was raised Catholic but am an atheist. I was militant in my teenage years but am now WAY more relaxed and really don't think about it.

My family has never been really pushy in terms of practicing though. But I did go to a Catholic school for elementary and middle school. I became an atheist when I was about 12-13 though.

f!s, I need some perspective :( (Arthur Conan Doyle drama)

Let me preface this by saying that I’ve been a Conan Doyle fan for years, and I am perfectly aware that the guy was not all sunshine and rainbows. He was pretty sexist sometimes, he had some seriously condescending colonialist attitudes (and was consequently very pro-war), he kept spouting spiritualist nonsense - some of which was not merely ridiculous, but also offensive to some of those coping with a loss.
None of these things were a dealbreaker to me. They were flaws I could look past; I felt sure, on the basis of some very solid evidence, that regardless of how mistaken he was in certain regards, he had a heart of gold and would never have e.g. hurt someone weaker than and dependent upon him.

I’m also pretty young and I happen to be very methodical in my research, which would explain the fact that until now I have never got my hands on a copy of the (relatively) recently published biography of Conan Doyle written by an A. Lycett. Nor have I - again, until now - heard of Georgina Doyle’s Out of the Shadows: The Untold Story of Arthur Conan Doyle’s First Family, which was released in 2004 and, to the best of my knowledge, never reprinted.
Having recently stumbled across both of these, I… well, I’m not gonna lie. I’m absolutely heartbroken.

For those not in the ACD community: they both cite previously unpublished materials from the Doyle archive, which seem to suggest pretty strongly that after his first wife’s death, ACD pretty much disowned Mary and Kingsley. Mary goes so far as to write to her brother that in the two years since Louise’s death, she had not heard “a single word of love” from her father. It seems also that ACD had not allowed her to come home for Christmas - only her second Christmas without her mother - despite the fact that she “begged” him to, and even scolded her for such “weakness of character”.

Georgina claims that such treatment made a “shy introvert” out of previously extroverted and outgoing Mary (which sounds like a serious emotional trauma to me??).

And it is all very well to dismiss this as a standard stepfamily feud (Mary and Kingsley were distinctly at odds with ACD’s second wife, Jean), but Mary was literally 17 and Kingsley was 14. They were children who’d just lost their mother, and they were fully financially dependent on ACD.

Um, maybe this is going to sound ridiculous to the people who don’t pay too much heed to the authors of their canons, but this is making me consider stopping identifying as a Holmesian. This is not to mention the fact that I’ve looked up to this man for a major part of my life and that he was one of the things that kept me going when I was suicidal a couple of years ago.

I desperately need some perspective. Is my reaction at all justified? Am I doing something wrong here? I’m a bit of a wreck.

I was thinking about this as I watched Monty Python all weekend and how it's been a tradition in my family. My grandfather first saw it when it came to America and told my dad to watch it. When I was older, my dad introduced it to my sister and I and we both fell in love with it.

I think for me I'd want to pass on The Wizard of Oz, Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Monty Python

Being Pro-Censorship

So this is a somewhat uncomfortable topic for me to talk about (because boy does it make me look bad) but I was wondering if I could get some opinions here.

I am of the opinion that children's access to literature should be somewhat censored by schools. I know that probably seems rather horrible to a lot of you but let me explain why I feel this way.

When I was 12, I picked up a copy of Gone with the Wind from my school library. And I loved it. I loved how ruthless Scarlett was and I loved how it gave the perspective of the Civil War from the South (as I grew up in the Northern US, this was the perspective that I learned in history class).

And...well...after reading that book, I came out of it with some rather misguided ideas. I remember thinking how awful the North was to the South and how it was understandable that they formed the KKK given that the situation was so chaotic.

It wasn't until later that I learned how wrong I'd been. I'm of the opinion that that book should have been accompanied by a companion guide to explain the historical context. If not, I really don't think it should have been in the library.

Now, you might say that it's a parent's job to address this but neither of my parents were born in the US. They knew even less about US history than I did.

I don't know...it seems like it's anathema to be pro-censorship (and maybe I was just a particularly stupid kid) but it worries me that I actually believed the KKK was justified and no one corrected me on that.

I was doing okay in the notorious first basement of Outlast until I got killed a couple times and became completely paralyzed by fear and dread. For those who don't know, the power has been turned off and you have to go down into an almost completely dark, partly flooded basement, into three rooms and then one center area to activate four things and turn the power back on while a fucking psychic with a club and incredible night vision hunts you. Outlast has a checkpoint save system, so if he kills you, you're right back to the basement entrance and have to go press all the whichwhats all over again. It's possible to stealth it for the most part if your timing is good and you listen for him in the noisy-ass water, or you can run through like a maniac and hope he doesn't get more than four hits on you, or you can hide in a locker for an hour and a half, shaking and trying to talk yourself into just getting it over with already, which I found the best option. It really is terrifying, and lots of players say it's the hardest part of the game. Unarmed survival horror is fun for me to watch, but boy do I suck at playing it, unsurprisingly. The Shalebridge Cradle was nowhere near as bad, probably because I was armed to the teeth and an experienced adventurer, not a journalist with terrible judgment. I love his snarky writing and am really enjoying putting my own spin on him as a character with very little canon to go on, but man, he should have taken a page from Freddie Lounds and shown up to the mysterious tip location with a gun. Even if guns didn't work out for anybody else, come on now. Most people would pick something up and at least try to defend themselves if they had to, which I think is where these games fall apart a little. I actually felt physically ill. I'll do a lot for fic research, but throwing up is right out, lol. Then I couldn't sleep until the sun started coming up. Joy!

I'm going to go ahead and cheat like a motherfucker as soon as I recover enough to go back in, because I was loving the exploration and taking pictures. It's all so horrible-beautiful, and such a big model of a Kirkbride style asylum that it's like urbex without the tetanus or risk of arrest! You can speed yourself up and slow your enemies down by editing the config file, it's hilarious. I've felt the fear, I get it, now leave me alone, you meanies, haha. Feel free to share your gaming or other mishaps. :D

I think I need to recalculate all my instincts about meal planning and cooking, and it's really frustrating.

See, after being unemployed for a pretty long time, I got a new job (and moved into a new place, which is less relevant for this). This has had two effects.

One, I have some money now. So I feel like it's less important to be frugal, and there's a lot more times when I want to go out and buy food to eat.

Two, my schedule has changed - instead of being fancy-free with my time, I have a 9 to 5 work schedule. Which means I'm much more likely to want regular meals at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and at much more regular times. I mean, I'd still try to eat regular meals, but it's a lot more loosey-goosey when you're not on a schedule. It also means that I'm consistently in the office at lunch, which is annoying.

So, for me, what this means is that, where before, I could just chow down on some leftovers whenever and however I wanted, I now have to plan it out. And because of that, when I was unemployed, I could pretty well just make a huge thing of food and know confidently that I was going to eat it. Whereas now it's a lot harder to make myself eat all my leftovers instead of just going out to buy food. So I feel like I'm either wasting food by not eating it or I'm kinda miserable because I don't want to eat it.

It's frustrating.

Also doesn't help that I've been really down on my own cooking, recently.
