Slash Fan Woes

Somewhat related to the secret about a book on Ancient Greece yesterday. I love slash, personally. I love writing it, I love reading it, etc., but when it comes to original fiction with gay relationships I find myself thinking "meh" most of the time. It's either too melodramatic or cliche or focuses too much on the relationship and not enough on the plot/action. It falls into dumb seme/uke tropes even worse than most slash out there, like Starfighter, or it's just goddawful, like the Nightrunner series.

Anyone else find this? Is there decent original fiction out there staring gay characters that's action/plot-heavy, focuses very little on the romance/sex, and doesn't read like bad slash fanfiction where bedroom roles define each character's entire personality?

I like fic exchanges but I also do my best writing to prompts. I've been given a pairing for a sign-up and I'm confident I'll be able to write them well, but the requester wasn't very specific at all about what they wanted. Their prompt was basically along the lines of "anything with these two!"

Do you think it would be 'unethical' for lack of a better word, to grab a prompt from an old kink meme or a prompt bingo or something like that? I need any kind of starting point to get going but I'm bad at coming up with my own prompts.

I just got up from trying and failing to take a nap to find drama with two RP blogs in my fandom -- let's call them A and B. B's character had a romantic interest in A's character, who didn't reciprocate, and A kept getting anons ranging from nagging to outright hostile because A's character wouldn't go out with B's character. Earlier today, A posted that they were really uncomfortable with this and that their character would no longer be interacting with B's character.

Between then and now, people decided that B, not the anons, were the ones upsetting A, and have been sending B death threats and other awful bullshit. I vaguely know A, and I know they're really upset by this. I don't know B at all but I don't think I know anyone who wouldn't be at least somewhat upset by this. And a part of me suspects (with no basis, mind, it's just my cynical side) that at least some of the anons sending B hate are the same ones who harassed A, in which case not only are they horrible, but completely missing the fact that they're hurting other people for things that were their fault in the first place.

If there was ever a time I wished I could punch strangers through the internet, this would be it. Argh. Punching wouldn't be enough. I just. I can't. This is not okay, not at all, and I can't stand it. I can't stand the fact that it's happening. I've sent both A and B asks saying it's not their fault that people are being disgusting, but that's about all I can do.

Documentaries cause me to come up with weird head canon.

Last night I watched a documentary, "How beer saved the world" which argues that the rise of agriculture, and civilization was due to the production of beer. One of the people on there actually said without beer humans would probably still be living in caves. Sound familiar?

In Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Kyubey said humanity would still be living in caves without the interference of the incubators. Now it is my head canon that one of the first, if not the first magical girl on earth wished for beer, or far more likely the knowledge of how to make it. I want to see this as a manga, or something now. I wonder if she had beer based powers.

This is why I don't believe that genderqueers/agenders/bigenders are a legit thing.

I know it's an unpopular opinion but to me transsexualism is a medical condition, a different mapping of your brain that produces extreme dysphoria and discomfort. Every MtF or FtM person I've met desired nothing more but be stealthy and transition to their true gender while flying under the radar while genderqueers are mostly people who cannot fathom that you don't have to adhere to gender roles all of the time and liking androgynous looks doesn't make you trans. This actually reinforces gender roles and trivializes the issues of people who were truly born in the wrong body.
