I am disturbingly early to this post. I've never gotten here before 200ish comments or so and I've never been first. LOL

We got a fuckton of snow this morning where I live, which turned to hail as I got to work. Half-hour commute turned to 2 hours because my city CAN'T DEAL WITH SNOW EVER, then I stayed late. Joy. (But at least I'm home and not wearing wet socks anymore?)

Mass shootings and The Mentally Ill

Disclosure: The opinion I'm about to express is likely colored by the fact that I have lived with what qualifies as a mental illness for almost 20 years.

The past few days I've observed people speak of gun violence in juxtaposition with mental illness. I've listened to person after person after person talk about how the real problem is that "The Mentally Ill" (no distinction) are going around shooting up people and that mental illness causes violence.

This is the message I am getting: The Mentally Ill -- and ONLY The Mentally Ill -- are at fault for mass shootings. The Mentally Ill need to be locked up and have rights taken away from them because they are the ONLY ones who do this kind of stuff. Anyone who commits a mass shooting is one of The Mentally Ill. America's gun culture has nothing to do with these shootings and even if it does, The Mentally Ill are the only people influenced enough to do something like this. The Mentally Ill should never be allowed to even touch a weapon, especially a gun. Mental health services need more attention and funding, not for the health or well-being of The Mentally Ill, but so The Sane People can feel safe. Never mind that The Mentally Ill are far more likely to be victims than perpetrators of these crimes. Never mind that The Mentally Ill is responsible for about 3-5% of these kinds of crimes. They are still all The Mentally Ill's fault, because Sane People Just Don't Do These Things Ever. Don't retreat, reload? Cool. Second Amendment remedies? Great. Mental illness? Lock them ALL up!

And who or what counts as "Mentally Ill" and needs to have something done about them? Anyone who has ever sat on a couch and talked to someone? Anyone who has ever been medicated? Had a breakdown? Self-harmed? Been hospitalized? 5150'd? Committed? Or should all of The Mentally Ill just be thrown into the same boat and be done with it?

Rewrite a season of your favorite (but imperfect) shows!

Pick one season that you dislike or have major problems with from a show (or shows) you love, and loosely summarize the alterations and alternative plot developments and character arcs that would make it better! How SHOULD have the sixth season of Buffy proceeded? What SHOULD have occurred during season 2 of Friday Night Lights? What SHOULD season 3 of Veronica Mars have done? And that sort of thing.

(Try not to step outside of the bounds of that season though unless you're dealing with a cliffhanger - rewrite a season, not a whole show).

So I made a couple orders over the weekend, realized I was perilously close to overdrawing, cancelled one part of a 4-part order.

This has resulted in my bank history getting all fucked up. I've managed to nail down most of the withdrawals to other orders, but the math isn't adding up right. I've got a payment of close to $60, and a deposit of $11.18. Making matters worse is the 4-item package, reduced to 3 items, was split into two separate deliveries, and for the life of me I cannot make the individual packages and their shipping costs add up, even with the 11 and change added in.

Everything says it's been shipped, but hell if I know what's even going on.

Geek Gifting Etiquette

Seriously, I don't know where else to ask and going anon in case someone I know sees this. It's got enough nerdery all over it to be Not Your Typical Gift Situation.

So, my housemates have a D&D group. I don't participate in this group, I simply am not a tabletop gamer and don't much care. When they come over, I go in the other room where it's quiet. Last weekend, several of them brought holiday gifts for each other, and one of them also got me a small gift. Why? IDK I'm sure it's a combination of not wanting the third wheel to feel left out and the idea that we are somewhat casual, passing acquaintances outside of these gaming nights.

It was one of those small anime figurines that you get in a batch - you know the type, there's four different possible figurines it could be, and the box won't tell you which one it is, part of the "fun" is the surprise of finding out which one you got. One of the options was in fact one of my favorite characters. However, that's not who was in the box. It was actually a character...I can't stand. I hate this character. I don't want this figurine.

What does one do with a figurine they don't want gifted by a person who isn't really a close friend and who you're not going to get an obligatory reciprocal gift anyway? How do you unload it discreetly? Besides eBay, because even though I didn't pay for it I'm not getting 99 cents for it. And on top of that, how do I explain when/if she comes over for game night and can see that it's not on my action-figure shelves?

So I have to say, all those Walking Dead secrets over the past couple weeks caused me to have a zombie dream where I tried to fend off a horde of them in my grandma's living room with John Steed's umbrella and failed miserably because I am not the people in my icon.

Also they objected to the term 'zombie' and insisted I call them the 'Living Dead' because that's what they identified with. SJ runs rampant through my subconscious I guess.
