I've just gotten over having been sick for a while with horrible coughing, enough that my ribcage feels horribly bruised. I can't ever remember hurting like this from being sick before. Moving too much and even breathing too deeply are painful enough, but I just sneezed and that was the most painful thing to happen to me all day.

Every once in a while we have a thread about things we still love even though they're problematic, and I have a lot. But there are also some things I found out I couldn't stomach when I revisited them. What are some of yours? Not things you reluctantly gave up for social justice, but things that you're just not able to enjoy anymore even if you wish you could?

Ethnicity in America

Hey guys, this is inspired by the Sami secret. I'd like to bring up a piece of discussion that I'm sure that at least a few Americans have experienced, but is otherwise kind of under-discussed in the broader ethnicity debate.

The major consensus in America is that "ethnic" is a syllogism for "person of color", mostly relies on skin tone, and that the majority of native Europe is considered white. Ergo, if you're British, Irish, Russian, French, Italian, whatever, you're white.

But I've experienced a different side to this. In my home community, which is very rural and most of the oldest families can trace their lineage back to the Mayflower. (There's a lot of class and ethnicity bound up in this; what I mean to say is that these families were basically landowning English.)

This group is considered "white", in the Anglo-Saxon Protestant version of white. My lineage is Irish, Greek, and Native-- basically in no way am I really considered white by this community, except for in the "new way", in which you're comparing skin color. My home community has a dual way of looking at whitness and ethnicity, and the old way is still entrenched in the community mindset as well.

And while you may be doubtful of this having any consequences in real life, you would actually be surprised. In my home community, people still discuss lineage and potential marriages. Some of the bigger, older families side-eye and grumble about marriage pursuits that aren't within the big, old English families. My paternal grandmother in fact forbade my father to marry my mother because she was one of "those people"-- that being Irish.

There are more examples, but I'll keep it to this for now.

Also, this isn't to say that I endorse the way that my home community views ethnicity or anything, I'm just trying to relate my experiences having listened to and heard this stuff.

Has anybody experienced this kind of ethnic pigeonholing before? Does anybody want to offer some broader historical context to this?

How does values dissonance affect your opinion of characters?

Do you judge characters based on how good they are relative to their time period/culture, or how good they are relative to your own values? And does your judgement of the characters make a difference depending on whether it's historical fiction written decades or centuries after the fact, or fiction that's a product of it's time?

Just wanted to say thanks for the advice and I went ahead and commented with the errors plus all the stuff I loved about the story, and the author was very kind and thanked me for catching the bits they missed. :) Thanks again for the advice!

Secret 1 - Atmosphere in fanfiction

[Picture is a painting or photograph? of a street from the past in shades of orange. It looks sort of old-fashionedly European in style. There are carriages and several people milling about. The buildings look old, about two or three stories tall? There is a monument of a person high up to the left. It's a very pretty picture.]

I wish fanfic would devote as much time writing love letters to the atmosphere and setting of their canon as they do writing love letters to the characters. Often, the settings are just as fascinating.
