Avenue Q: My favorite musical! Everything I loved about Sesame Street now for adults! I do gotta be honest here guys: Ginainthekingsroad spent way too long with me trying a lot of things to make something work, but for some reason, we just couldn't get the file transferred right. At least not in a timely manner for stream tonight. So I'm just going to use some camrip stuff off youtube combined with high quality clips. The video's gonna be kinda lousy quality wise but the sound is good and you can hear the voices, which counts for a lot even with a puppet show so unless stream complainswe will be doing this!

I rarely do, and most of the people I know who aren't in school are the same. My parents and their parents also. People make a huge fuss about going out and ~having lives~ but in reality it looks to me like after working 9-6 five days in a row, most people like to relax at home.

Should we stop weak-manning arguments?

So I was reading a little bit about the concept of 'weak-man' arguments. Basically, the idea is somewhat similar to a strawman argument, except instead of creating a totally false version of your opponent's views that you can refute, you choose some particularly weak or unpopular or extreme version of the argument for your opponent's position that you know you can refute. And the consequence is that your opponent can't exactly say that no one holds that view, because some group obviously does.

So, for an obvious example, if someone was trying to criticize religion as a whole by attacking the Westboro Baptist Church, that might be a weak-man argument. Because the Westboro Baptist Church is an atypically extreme religious group, one which a huge number of religious people disagree with, but you can't deny that it is a religious group and that it does exist.

And I think this is a kind of argument that we like to make here a lot. Most obviously, to me, with feminism and other SJW-type things, where people will point out people on tumblr who do or think something ridiculous, and use that as an argument against feminism as such. And we do that so, so much. But I think it also comes up in tons of other arguments. Arguments about religion, definitely - whenever we're talking about militant Internet atheists, that might actually be a weak man. Arguments about politics, about culture, even shipping arguments - it's an argument that we seem to use a lot (self included).

And it's frustrating to think about. I mean, on the one hand, when you're arguing against those positions, it's very frustrating, because you have to start quibbling about whether those positions actually represent the mainstream of the group in question, and it's a distraction, and it feels like a way of avoiding the real central questions. On the other hand, though, these groups do exist, and maybe it is important to point them out, and maybe they do represent the true views of the people involved.

So I guess I was just wondering what you all thought. Are weak-man arguments valid? Or is this something that we should try to do less of? Your thoughts?

Foods You thought you hated that you don't

So I've always thought I hated beets. I remember eating them once as a child and hating them.

Only, turns out at least now I love them. My sister's boyfriend made Borscht for Christmas, and it was amazing. It has become one of my favorite foods.

I came across someone who thinks that not having sex with someone whenever they want is like starving a dog. Like, they actually made that comparison. And they think the desire for sex trumps everything else, and even if you're yelling at someone for not giving you sex, you're still showing that you love them by not leaving them, so they should give in to you.

I'm so...like, I know they're ridiculous and have no effect on my life, but I'm so angry about it. I mean first of all, sex isn't actually necessary, so not having sex is IN NO FUCKING WAY COMPARABLE to being starved. And second of all, treating someone like shit because they won't have sex with you is NOT A GOOD WAY TO GET SOMEONE TO HAVE SEX WITH YOU, and he refuses to listen to that.

I can't stop thinking about it. He's a fucking piece of shit and it's no wonder his relationships suck, because he only cares about himself and he won't see it.

Probably spoilers for Shameless if anyone replies....

The first ep of the new season seemed almost - fanfictionesque! The whole situation at the Mickey's house was like - fanfic trope city. Not *bad* or anything, just...odd, for mainstream tv. And who else was *massively* disappointed (as well as really confused) that they replaced Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Fiona's boss? I kept wondering who the hell that guy was Fiona was hanging out with! Heh.

I run both Chrome and FF, both most current, the only 'add ons' being AdBlockPlus in both, and a Theme Font Style Changer in FF because last year, suddenly, all the fonts were weird and teeny and that fixed it back to 'normal'.

And Google.docs keep fucking up *both* browsers, making them run slowly, locking them up, making me restart. If i open Tumblr while i have a .doc open, too? Forget it. So frustrating! I've got Avast on and have scanned my PC with it and also MalWareBytes and i don't have any issues so i just...don't get it. Google.docs being annoying for anyone else?

I'm looking into dying my hair for the very first time, and I'm keen on an unnatural colour - haven't decided what yet, but pink, purple or blue are the top contenders. What brands do you recommend for such colours, FS? I'd like something really intense/bright, and long-lasting. Manic Panic seems to keep coming up as a suggestion, but is there anything else or is Manic Panic the best?

Also, any haircare tips for dyed hair?
