A friend of mine arranged for a well-known (if not famous) writer to give a talk, and said she was very difficult to work with. In fairness though, as much as I loved this writer's memoirs, it was pretty obvious in them that she's not the nicest person. (And given what she's been through, I kind of don't blame her.) It didn't ruin my friend's enjoyment of the memoirs, but it was a disappointment.

Eh, I've generally done fairly well in terms of celebrities I like not being giantic assholes, but if I had to pick one creative type who fits, it'd be Doug TenNapel. I've enjoyed some of his works (the Earthworm Jim cartoon is still one of my favorites, and I liked how he handled the Catholicism in "Black Cherry", despite him being some Protestant denomination. And 'Catscratch' was funny at times), but hokey smokes, does he ever come off as sanctimonious and cantankerous on Twitter. I'd followed him for a brief while, and I eventually had to unfollow him. Even if I agreed with him on a few topics (disclosure, my political leanings are straight down the middle), he was just so... Unpleasant at times.

Still enjoy his creative output, but TenNapel's really a case where you're better off separating the artist from the art, IMHO.

Lynn Flewelling. Not that famous, and not someone I really admired per se, but an author that had a mailing list back in the 90's, which I signed up for out of curiosity.

Her stuff wasn't even that great, but she acted like a complete tyrant. She would delete and ban people for trying to start discussions about world meta that she "didn't agree" with. And she would also get extremely butthurt if anyone tried to post fanworks.

Have you ever met a celeb you really admired and found out they were a sweetheart?

I got to meet Jim Butcher at a con, and he was really down to earth and funny. He had a scheduled reading of "Skin Game," which he did wonderfully, and then asked if we'd like to hear the first four chapters of "Cinder Spires." Ofc we all said HELL YES, so he did an unscheduled reading at 9pm in the hotel lobby. It was great.

I also got to meet James Marsters and tell him that it's partially his fault I'm a writer. He seemed really, genuinely touched by that and was having a great time with the fans.

Strong Light Bike Lock

So every bicycle I've had until now ended up being stolen. It's just a fact of life in this neighborhood; if you don't watch your bike, it will be stolen. But before now I was riding cheap kids' bikes from Toys R Us. Recently I saved up and bought myself a $400 bike that I really love. Part of the reason it cost so much is because I'm short and light plus I'm really uncomfortable on cruisers, so I had to find something to fit my size (I'm still wearing the seat too low) and have hand brakes, and it came out expensive.

So I'm terrified of this bike getting stolen. I'm not worried when I'm at home because my neighborhood's not that bad, at least I know it won't get stolen if I keep it in back and not in view of the street (that's how I lost bike #1. It was red. Poor bastard got placed against the front of the house while it was being painted and someone just saw it and lifted it). But I want to be able to take it to places where I can leave it chained up for hours if I want to, and not minutes while I quickly make purchases/run errands.

I've till now been using one of those letter-combination locks, but my sister recently lost her bike with one of those because the chain was thin enough to cut through. I know the best is on of those U-Locks, but they're incredibly heavy when balanced against my low weight.

TL:DR, because of my small size I need a bicycle lock that is as close to indestructible as possible, but is also light enough to carry everywhere without it slowing me down. Any suggestions welcome; I am willing to splurge if it's something really good.

Myself, I'm going to Norway in a few weeks! Anyone have any advice? I'll be in Oslo for a few days, and then a few days camping in a cabin. I hear Oslo is really expensive (even the hostel we booked was more expensive than any other hostel I've ever stayed at), anyone have any advice on how to cut costs? People do... speak English right?
