I'm reading 'The Golem and the Jinni' by Helene Wecker. A creepy little man has a golem created to be his wife, then he dies on the journey from Poland to America. A tinsmith accidentally releases a Jinni who has been trapped in an olive oil lamp for over a thousand years. They wind up in 1899 New York.

It's pretty great so far. The characters are pretty varied religiously and ethnically, which is refreshing. They're generally decent people, and I'm enjoying the story a lot.

Male-female friendships

I hear a lot of complaining about how in media men and women are never allowed to be 'just' friends, which is not an unreasonable complaint; what I wanna know is, what are your favourite M/F platonic friendships? Like for me:

-Lee/Francine in 'Scarecrow and Mrs. King'. They have an extremely contentious relationship where they pick at each other all the time, but mostly I think they butt heads because they're so very similar. I like that they can switch from that needling to professionalism on the job, too.

-Joan/Sherlock in 'Elementary'. They endlessly challenge each other and support each other.

-Ichabod/Abbie in 'Sleepy Hollow'. Actually I support them as a couple, but not at this point in the story. I'm really enjoying them as friends.

-kind of an obscure one, but in the 'Lower Decks' episode of TNG, the relationship between Worf and the young Bajoran ensign was wonderful. They were friends within the bounds of a professional superior/subordinate relationship.

-Janeway/Paris in 'Star Trek: Voyager'. They are professional on-duty and friends off...they did make babies one time but that episode was horrible and most fans have collectively decided we hallucinated it.

Writing comms

So yes! We were talking about this in the last post. There's been talk before of some f!s members starting their own writing comm to discuss writing ideas and so on. And an anon replied to my comment a couple of hours ago with a comm they created as a sort of start:

I think they were looking for people to help mod and pretty it up too. But they also said that if somebody wants to make something better from scratch, they could go ahead. So how about it, f!s?

Who here likes dark chocolate? That's not a metaphor for anything. I mean, dark chocolate. Or are you a strictly milk chocolate person?

I hate the stuff. Too bitter. I'm here eating a bar that's at 41% and cringing because it's too bitter. But I spent three-fifty on it and I hate wasting money. Ugh.

Games thread!

Curious, what's your favorite non-video, non-playground game? I'm talking about board games, card games, pencil and paper games and their ilk.

I adore mancala and the pen and paper game of Box In, where you make a grid on a sheet of paper and each person takes turns making a line connecting one dot to another in order to make boxes. And every time you make a box, you fill in your initial. And the person with the most boxes at the end wins.
