General comments:

Let's talk about dialogue!

Let's talk about dialogue. Because I love dialogue. But I hate shitty dialogue. The problem arises, however, when I can't seem to find a good way to describe good dialogue. The form that good dialogue takes is, I think, dependent on the type of story being told.

But here's something I've noticed about dialogue on my quest for some good, angsty, non-romance fic: So much of it is bad.

At best, it sounds like the author is regurgitating a pamphlet on suicide/depression/mental illness/poverty/what have you. Somewhere in the middle* you get characters all of a sudden becoming Mr. Talky Sensitivity with a box of intuition in his back pocket. And at worst, you get major infantilization of *somebody*. And it's just GRATING.

* I think I may actually hate the OOCness of Suddenly Sensitive more than all of them, actually. I can hit the back button when a character in despair starts acting like a three year old, because that's just bad fic. But sometimes "Bro, let me now talk at you like I am the Super Best Therapist Ever," hides in really good stories, just waiting to pull off a sneak attack.

So what makes dialogue particularly bad -- or particularly good -- for you, F!S?

What's with all the hard to read secrets? Seriously, how hard is it to toss a stroke or a drop shadow around your text? Or, you know, not use such lightfaced font in a color that's so close to your background?

So I offered to beta read for the first time in my five years of writing fanfic for a fandom I've recently been getting into. And they were the most crappily written fics EVER. Oh my God, does no one know how to use commas? Or where to put quotes? Or how to use conjunctions? OR anything of use when it comes to writing something? And, as the cherry on top, random, unwarned for, rape scene where the victim was like "hey, this is not bad at all!" WHAT? Like, ok, I get that they were first drafts, but they were just horrible!

What sort of fandom is OP in?? Fandom, in my experience, seems to have a muuuuch higher proportion of people with advanced degrees than the average population. A lot of people I know in fandom are working towards their Master's/PhDs. I know a great deal of people with high-powered careers who need a break from their stressful lives now and again. You're really not that special in fandom, OP.

I know I've posted a book rec thread a couple weeks ago; through it (and some researching) I found this series that I absolutely love. It's called the Psy-changeling series by Nalini Singh. It's pretty good (well, to me, anyway) and I was wondering if anyone here has read it and/or has any recs for this sort of book?

It's paranormal/fiction/romance with some explicit scenes (a couple each book).
