Not-Mindless action movies!

Now I love me a thoughtless explosion fest as much as any popcorn-muncher, but what I REALLY like are action movies that have some more care put into them. Ones with some self awareness, some humor, some heart, that don't make me go "OH COME ON" every five minutes. Mostly when I want to scratch this itch I watch me some Indiana Jones of some Mummy movies, but I know there's more! What are your favorites?

Historical Fiction That Doesn't Emphasize Romance (or Blood and Gore)

Kindasorta based on the Outlander secret.

So once upon a time, anon loved historical fiction. Then she became an adult and learned historical fiction for grown ups was largely romance. If it wasn't romance, it was political blood and gore.

I don't mind romance. I also realize history is filled with political blood and gore. But I want a good historical fiction novel that strikes a sort of even balance? I think what I liked about it as a kid was how much the emphasis was on the characters and their relationships, which could involve romance but didn't have to. There would still be gorey and depressing things, half the time someone's mother died in childbirth or saw a soldier's feet bleeding in the snow, but it wasn't 95% of the book. Like the Dear America book about the Oregon trail - there's a really gruesome chapter where the MC accidentally poisons people with hemlock (at least, I think it's the MC?), but other things happen as well.

So... yeah. Any recs?

Hi FS. Can anyone offer me some advice? What I really need is some confirmation of whether or not I'm going in the right direction. :/

Basically, I've been ill for a long time and put on a lot of weight. I'm now taking up exercise again but seem to be really injury prone. So, I'm planning on taking a month to focus just on low impact sports like swimming and yoga, before trying to take on higher impact sports again (running, weights).

Does this sound like a good plan? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Any advice appreciated.

What are some pet peeves you have that revolve around movies/tv/games/books?

I am currently on WoW leveling a rogue. And I realized it annoys the fuck out of me when I have a NPC battling with my for a quest. It makes it impossible to sneak around because they are aggroing everything in a 10 yard radius.

Another pet peeve is in (generally horror) movies where a bunch of people die. But at the end everyone is all happy and relieved. I just want a movie where it ends with the survivors trying to explain to cops that some ghost stole some kid they adopted three months ago.

I cannot stand female celebrities who act snarky to interviewers asking about their dresses/jewelry. If you don't want to be asked about skip the red carpet.

It isn't like this is something new. Stop harassing the interviewers for doing their job. If they are not asking off the wall questions like, "What about them boobs of yours?", stick your hand in the manicam and smile.

Also, some designer most likely gave you that dress for free for the SOLE purpose of you promoting it for them. Instead, you are going to act like a dick and ask the interviewer if they do the 360 cam on the guys.

Of course they fucking don't. Who wants to see 40 black and white tuxes?

Since several people told me it's amazing, I wanted to try it - I'm pretty new to gaming. So I bought a second-hand retail version. The first time I played it was a couple of hours ago and I was kinda surprised: it looks really bad. Is it normal? I mean, I know that it's old (2000, I think?) but it looks worse than FF7! And it's really slow. I know my computer can handle it cause it can run recent games like Skyrim or Batman Arkham Origins.

Should I use mods to make it look better? Should I change the resolution (1366 x 768)?

So it's starting to get a little late for general com, but whatever. I tend to be busy during the actual week and want to talk about it now.

Anyways, I just started watching it this past week and I am loving it so far. Just finished episode four and OMG I can't remember the last time I was this invested in... well, not the characters maybe, but the general writing and continuity and themes? I just want to talk about it with people.

I've also started writing post episode reviews/thoughts (http://theclacks.tumblr.com/tagged/my-reviews), which is a new-ish thing for, but also rather fun. I need to post what I've written for episode three and write up my thoughts for episode four. It's frustrating though because I don't want to dip entirely into fandom yet until I catch up, but I also don't want to wait that long + tumblr isn't the best for discussion anyways???
